I recently reinstalled my graphics drivers, now whenever I go from integrated to nvidia, I lose aero and I can't find a way to get it back without restarting (this did not happen before)

Is transparency enabled? When it's on the nvidia card? Perhaps it applies settings when you switch.

Well there are several ways to get to the window you want:

Method one: type "enable" (no quotes) into the start menu. You'll see "Enable or disable transparent glass in windows." Click that. Make sure the box is checked for "Enable transparency."

Method two: Right click on the desktop >> Personalize >> Window Color. Make sure the box is checked for "Enable transparency."

Hope this helps! If it does nothing, it's driver-related. Perhaps try an earlier driver?
