    hi guys

i just bought the u80v-a1 today, and am having trouble connecting to my wireless network. it "connects" and the network and sharing centre tells me that i have limited access (local only) , the network is public, and that it is an unidentified network. i've tried reinstalling the driver, rebooting, uninstalling norton. also, the machine also seems to hang on me whenever i try to check/uncheck things in the network adaptor settings.. i'm running vista home premium sp1. should i upgrade to sp2? and my router is maybe 3 or 4 years old, so could it be a problem with the router?

any suggestions? i have looked on google for quite a few hours now..

Try resetting the router or connecting to a different one. IF it connects to another router, it's a router problem.

First thing, connect directly to the modem and see if you get connectivity that way. Then check the router settings to make sure DHCP is set up, most routers have that by default. (DHCP will assign your network card an IP on the local net)

if all that has been done you might wanna take a look at upgrading your router's firmware. did wonders for an old d-link i had.

do a hard reset for your router, if it doesn't help then it might be the router is just dead, i had it happen at work and the IT couldnt figure it out until i suggested to switch out the routers >_<

akso get into the routers settings and make sure the onboard firewall isnt set to lockdown.

thing is the router works for all other computers. 2 desktops and eeepc running xp, and macbook running osx leopard.. so it's not that the router's dead perse.

OK, connect the u80 wirelessly(even if its local) and then go into the settings page in the router, check you gateway on the u80, and compare to the rest connected and not(if you can read) and see if the are on the same network, you might need to plug in you laptop's mac address in order to allow it access to the net that may be a fix.

if you network isnt secured, my next suggestion is to reset your router to default(straight from the factory settings) then secure your network!
connect only your laptop first see if it connects online if it does then continue to connect the other comps one by one and see if another computer loses connectivity, if thats the case i dont have an answer for you but maybe check to see if there are any settings that prevent extra comps from being connected at anytime to the router? or the range for ip addresses needs to be extended to include more?
also check to see if DNS is still being sent.
sorry kinda late here ill f/u more in the morning

I always have issues with Vista and wireless networks. I would try the diagnose problems feature in vista networking.

Also you can try to use a static IP address config in your TCP/IP settings on your Asus U80. I think by default d-link addresses are

    192.168.0.8 (example ip)
    255.255.255.0 (subnet)
    192.168.0.1 (gateway)

    192.168.0.1 (dns)

I have the exact same router, and I am using a g71g. From my internet connections, I am able to connect via wireless and go online but I also get the Unidentified Network under my wireless connection. Whenever I change the Unid network to private it will somehow change back to public. The only issue I have is streaming my media on my computer via media share onto my ps3. I hope you find a solution to this issue as it may help me too.
