I bought my W2V in 9/05, but put it aside when i got a slightly smaller V1J. Now i'm missing the big 17" screen and sound system so i want to switch back to the W2V. I would like to put a bigger HD in, probably a 250g.

The computer guy at the nearby store says I might need new drivers and BIOS. I emailed ASUS tech support and they replied that they have never tried to upgrade a W2V to 250g so they can't guarantee that it would work.

Can anyone shed light on this situation please?

    BTW, I'm running XP.

Yep, the notebook is quite old so there might conceivably be BIOS incompatibility issues. I suggest you try getting a hold of a 250GB HDD first, and see if it works, before paying.

And of course updating to latest version of the BIOS on support.asus.com

If it does work, I suggest the WD2500BEVE HDD from Western Digital.

Moreover, I think it's really the only option for 250GB for the PATA interface, so it may actually be the only one for you (including the first step of trying it to see if it works).

I suspect W2V is PATA, right?

Driver update required for a HDD upgrade?? That's a strange one indeed; XP can handle the higher addresses beyond 137Gb, and as long as the interface matches I can't imagine what would possibly trip up the MB.

The W2v should be PATA/EIDE - I think that was one of the last models before Asus switched to SATA for all their notebook drives.

No, I don't see any difficulties with Windows, either.
