I am not sure if I am supposed to ask this in the owners lounge thread or not.. that thread is getting so large and a bit unwieldy so hopefully this is ok.

the graphics card in my ux32vd appears to be borked. after a few seconds of playing a game, the screen will start to artifact, and then it will crash. It appears to do it right as the graphics card gets to 70°C.

I've been playing games on this computer since I got it, and its never been an issue until this weekend, where it started doing it.

I did do the thermal repaste mod, so I am worried that my warranty is probably void.. I did the mod back in september, and have never experienced any issues until this weekend, so I am pretty sure I didn't mess it up.. especially since its erroring out at 70°C, where as a normal non-thermal repasted ux32vd chugs away at over 80°C without any issues.

I've uninstalled, an reinstalled nvidia drivers, trying the newest, and the one listed on the asus site. No luck either way.

Does anyone have a similar problem, and or solution? (hopefully!)

    thanks

Has it ever overheated previously? Intermittent problems could occur if it hits a threshold that it previously crossed, even if in otherwise normal circumstances the temps are fine.

You most likely did void your warranty. That's not to say Asus won't service it; but you'll be stuck with paying shipping, parts, and labor, where applicable.

Is the problem ONLY occurring at said temps? And is it only under load?

It errors out like clockwork everytime.. as soon as it hits 70°C an artifact or two will occur, and then it errors right out. I compared it to another ux32vd and the gpu seems to heat up faster... so im wondering if something has gone arye with the heatpipe or something.. gonna take it apart as soon as i can find the blasted torx screwdriver..

    :D

Well, keep us posted. I'm wondering if there is a problem with the thermal monitoring system on the board. Hopefully the GPU in itself is not faulty.

i am hoping so as well.. it seems signs are pointing to it being ok, as it runs fine up to 70...

This has been my most favorite computer i've ever had, so I really hope it isn't a goner.

Mind you it works just fine for everything other than games right now.

Reapplied the thermal compound last night. no luck.. works perfectly right up to 70°C, and then crashes. So sad.

Now I get to find out how much it costs to get it fixed.. which I am guessing is going to be close to the cost of a new notebook.. I am wondering if I should just go get a new one instead.

Get a quote first, but yes, with the warranty void, it will almost certainly be more cost efficient to get a new notebook (that can depend on what notebook you purchase to replace it, though). Give Asus a call and see if they can give you a quote over the phone - although chances are that they will request you to send it in first so that they can inspect it, THEN offer you a quote.
