Zydan, mine does the same thing. I made sure and changed the power button settings so that when I press it, it shuts down. Every few shutdowns, the screen goes black but the power, wireless (at the bottom left) and the power (top right) LEDs stay on. Pretty annoying, but hopefully will go away with a bios update.
That light that looks like headphones? You have to look at it from the top down, but its actually the top of a little lightbulb. I thought it was headphones too : ).

I initially had the shutdown problem on mine, too. After I wiped the drive and installed XP, I haven't noticed the problem. I am still finishing my re-install of Vista Ultimate, and I haven't had the "incomplete" shutdown problem yet.
Might not make a difference, but when I shutdown, I use the Start menu to shut down, rather than just pressing the power button. -
I havent had it happen yet, No idea why.

The reason why I think the bios is not recognizing the battery is because when I go into the 'power' menu in the bios, it does not give me the option to calibrate the battery like it does when I have the modular battery installed. Also when I use the calibrate function, only the modular battery is drained. Windows can still see the main battery and NHC can see it but the notebook refuses to USE it! As far as windows is concerned, everything is hunky dory. I don't get any low battery warnings or anything when the modular battery is low. Windows does not try to hibernate at all the machine just abruptly dies with the mod battery at 0% and the main battery at oh about 87 %
Any ideas? Anyone else have this issue? I would really hate to go the RMA route since I have been looking forward to this machine for soo long. Asus has to do better than this. I have spent way too much money for an advertised feature (that majorly affects the operation of the unit) for it to be so buggy. These battery issues are the type of huge bugs that should have been found and fixed long before mass production. Especially in a notebook where the manufacturer has a much tighter control over the type and number of user serviceable parts -
yup i just sent my machine away with a 30 day full replacement...asus has agreed to do a complete replacement of my machine, im also going to try and rma the batter or attemp to return it to excaliberpc but i think they will just tell me to contact asus again...
it really does suck having to rma but you do what you gotta do..
they pay for overnite shipping both ways, so that is a definate plus...and i used acronis true image 10's recovery disc to make a full backup of the 2 partitions, so once my machine is returned it will be the same...
in the mean time for those who have the modular battery, dont run it in conjunction with your main battery, you can try but if it fails on you, you got your warning... -
Well I sent off a support email to Asus detailing the problem and gave them a link to this thread so let's see what they say....
-
Can we have a poll of how many V1S owners have this above battery problem?
-
This would definately interest me as my German/European V1S is arriving this week and with it a modular bay battery. A user from Austria who got his modular battery from the same retailer as mine also got the problem with the main battery not being useable now...
-
I spoke with Asus tech support today and he seems to think that the battery itself is bad so he sent me an RMA number for the battery. He says if it still doesn't work right with the new battery then they will RMA the whole notebook.
@Garak: Has your friend called Asus tech support yet? I am interested in finding our how Asus is going to handle this issue. Probably like the other battery issue. Pretend like the problem doesn't exist! -
Alright, there is definitely something wrong with my V1s-a1. After using other laptops with similar specs (t61p to name one), the v1s gets much hotter. It is incredibly uncomfortable to type (right wrist) or use the mouse for extended periods.
Are any other v1s owners experiencing this? The 208 bios didn't change anything.
Other people can put their laptops in their laps. After feeling the bottom of mine, I wouldn't think of doing that.
My temps don't seem that bad.
After using winamp and surfing: (speedfan)
HD0: 39
Temp1: 64
Core 0: 42
Core 1: 43 -

a1, i've had it for a month.

Your temps are very good. My temps are much higher most of the time but it does not get hot on the surface at all.

i could get on average about 3 hours of life out of my stock battery, by tweaking the power settings, i dont recall em all for i dont have it in front of me right now..
over all though i am really happy with my v1s, the build is top notch, its quick, asus support rocks!! free overnite shipping both ways, 4 day turn around...they received my notebook yesterday i checked the rma status and it should be shipped out tomorrow overnight so back by thursday...u can get that elsewhere...granted u dont want to be sending our your laptop to begin with...
i am happy with this purchase as opposed to goin with dell or hp as originally planned...the resolution and specs alone is what sold me...also the docking station and modular bay... -

Hi there,
I got my German V1S and modular bay battery today. Installed BIOS 208 first, crossed my fingers and inserted the battery.... It worked like a charm
Tried it with only main, main + modular and only modular. Only problem so far is that sometimes while running the notebook (bios or vista doesn't matter) when removing or placing into the modular battery the computer powers off. I have to see what's going on there...
I also got the Samsung X65 here and made some photos to show the difference in screen brightness:

Left Samsung, middle Asus, right my old Targa/MSI

garak69: I think it is not switching between main battery and modular battery. -
@honguy
You're right, it doesn't switch to the main battery and doesn't shut down or hibernate, just powers off. After taking out the modular battery it boots ok with the main battery.
Otherwise it's fine taking out modular while running with both batteries and still working. The problem with the hard shutdown has only occured twice so far and as I said I have to look into this.
Getting a left click is fairly easy on the lower and left side of the button. Think of it as the letter L. The Sides facing the touchpad and the fingerprint sensor as well as the middle of the button don't produce a click. The right button however is easier to press, not on the touchpad or reader sides but in the middle an the other sides. -
garak69 any Idea how much time on main battery?
-
@honguy
Not yet, I've been playing around with it until now and investigatin the modular bay problems. I think I'll test the main battery lifetime with batteryeater the other day or does anyone know a better test tool? -
@honguy
Look at matt_h1's review to see the battery liftimes. They are the same as mine. Maximum (absolute, this means full power saving options!) is (with new NVidia drivers) exactly 4h, before it was 3h40min. -
Interesting matti, Which driver number is that? And Ive noticed that under vista the 8600GT rarely downclocks on battery, And there is no powermizer control that I can find unlike my old 7400.
-
alright, sorry to bring this back up again, but Everest and Core Temp are reporting cpu temp of 70 C while surfing and winamp. Right now, it sounds like the fan is off.
Im going to call asus support tomorrow. So far ive been very disappointed with the v1s. The poor build quality (it feels like it's going to snap in half when i pick it up) and heat issue is really a letdown. -
-
The laptop is not very portable. The screen wobbles like crazy when it is moved (The hinges are sturdy though).
The material feels like one step up from cheap plastic. I don't know where the reviewers are finding the "excellent" build material.
Every part of the laptop is flexible, almost with a glued-together feel. The screen flexs and depresses a huge amount. I'm afraid to put even a notebook on top of the screen when it's closed.
Additionally. The case rattles when the speakers are set above medium.
After playing around with toshibas, dells, and the lenovo t61p, I'm afraid to say the v1s feels like a child's toy. My friends agree with this. The t61p actually feels like a solid object that can be used a lap or bed, for over $200 less. -
jamus28: The reason I asked you this is because I am looking forward to buy V1S B1 and I wanted to know everything about it.
-
The 8600M GT only downclocks when you got the right drivers. I managed to make the PowerMizer work with the modded 163.69 drivers but then I reinstalled them and now I can't get it to work anymore.
The only possibility to make the PowerMizer work again is setting the device ID to 040F (QuadroFX 1700) and installing the desktop drivers. This is how I got the 20min battery life increase (I think it is due to the PowerMizer). -
If NHC ever sees another update, that has powermizer controls, It dosent support the 8 series at the moment though.
-
I hope this update comes soon... or any other program that allows controlling PowerMizer.
-
I found an URL to an nvidia doc that states "Not available with windows vista"
http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/163.71/163.71_NVIDIA_Control_Panel_Quick_Start_Guide.pdf
P32 (note this is the control panel guide)
PowerMizer Mobile - Change PowerMizer Settings
Available only with notebook computers.
Not available with Windows Vista.
Theres more on page 41. This is for version 163.71 -
Found a thread on this in the windows OS/software forums
-
PowerMizer is running again with Tweakforce.com XTreme-G-drivers 163.67.
2958 3DMarks, the same as with default drivers, but overclocking is not possible anymore. -
Ive been using AtiTool to watch the clocks, On my old laptop (7400m) Whenever you went on battery it locked the clocks to their powersaving state unless you configured to do it otherwise, On the 8600GT it might downclock to the middle setting, or go down to powersaving breifly but as soon as you run anything it going back up to full power.
-
This is exactly what mine does now. At least PowerMizer is working now, but it doesn't let us configure its behaviour. The drivers are still very buggy (games, sleep mode, hibernate problems) and lots of features are missing.
Finding the best (but not good) drivers is a torture. NVidia has to work hard on this. I chose NVidia because I hated ATI for exactly the same things. Now I have to realize that NVidia is even worse.
