Is this normal? Whenever I encode anything such as xvid, my cpu temp goes really high. The room temp is about 22-24 degrees, we are in summer here.

I've bought a zalman cooler for the laptop and it works quite well, when the pc is idling cpu runs at 50-52C degrees... but soon as I start encoding it goes up to 90-100 degrees

I put artic silver 5 on the cpu/gpu about 6 months ago and it was all fine, then I noticed the heat and decided to re-apply the artic silver 5, that was last week.

Those temps do seem a bit high. I believe AS5 takes about a month or so to properly set, but in the meantime you could try and cleaning out your fans/vents.

    100c is near critical temps.

You can try undervolting the CPU.

The Asus G1S suffer from overheating aswell.

Did the G1S have CPU overheating issues as well? I was always under the impression that only the GPU had issues. Nevertheless, undervolting the CPU would be a great idea. :)

V1J/V1S never had good cooling to begin with. The G1 has a bigger heatsink than the V1 does. My V1J sometimes goes about 80C on max load for xVid, but also keep in mind that it is a 2GHz (V1Jp-AK006P T7200 2.0GHz @ 667FSB) and the newer V1S had a 2.2 (V1S-A1 T7500 2.2GHz @ 800FSB) or 2.4 (V1S-B1 T7700 2.4GHz @ 800FSB depending on when you got it, so I would expect it to go higher.

Anyway, 50C idle seems normal. I've never had it go that high except when I did Intel TAT on it. 100C is a bad thing for the system, even if it was designed to go up to max 100C ( http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SLA43).

I have a V1S, and can safely say it gets annoyingly hot. Using FX Composer sometimes with a usb mouse plugged in ends up with physical discomfort in my right palm from having it near the vent on the right hand side for 15/20minutes.. :(

I would suggest making sure the notebook is clean of dust (which mainly gathers between the fan and the heat radiator).

Additionally, make sure the fan is ramping speeds up as the CPU is getting hotter. Bad or buggy ATK drivers can cause this feature to malfunction, so in case the fan is not ramping up properly do reinstall the ATK drivers.

    Post back with results.

Hey, I had the same probelm. I got to 103 Celsius when gaming, but after cleaning out the fan, I only go to about 80.

There are a couple of ways... and it depends on how serious your fan and/or heatsink are clogged. If it's just a small amount of dust, blowing it out with a can of duster is a quick way to break it up, although you will want to angle the stream to the sides as opposed to directly into the vent so that the dust blows to the edges instead of back into the chassis. Alternatively, now THIS MUST BE DONE CAREFULLY -- you can take a long corner type cleaning attachment, dip it in soapy water, let it dry, and vacuum the vent. Dipping the attachment in soapy water and letting it dry is a cheap oldskool way to rid it of static electicity. MAKE SURE TO KEEP THE VACUUM CLEANER AWAY FROM THE NOTEBOOK AS FAR AS POSSIBLE! It generates a magnetic field like any electric motor and can SERIOUSLY DAMAGE your goods, and make sure the laptop is totally off with the battery removed.

If it's really bad (clogged), it involves disassembling the unit and removing the dust essentially by hand, if it's turned into a lint trap.

For pros, there is stuff like the datavac which I use:
    http://www.metrovacworld.com/Shopping/category.asp?catalog_name=metrovac&category_name=computer&page=1

I am in no way affiliated with that link and have no disclosure to make. It's just a tool I use so please don't flame me for linking to them.

Unscrew and remove the back panel access door. This will reveal the fan and cooling system.

Use a can of compressed air and damp q-tips to clean the individual fins on the fan. ONLY use the damp q-tips for cleaning the inside of the fan. Use the compressed air to blow air away from the laptop.

If the radiator is badly clogged you will have to remove the tape that holds the fan and the radiator fins to get the dust out. If it's done carefully the tape can be reused.

    Nice pic btw :)

Absolutely amazing, there was a very thin layer of dust on all blades of the fan, cleaned that with a damp cutton bud and its running at least 10 degrees cooler!

Makes sense though, I couldn't work out why the cpu was running so much hotter then when I first got the laptop over a year ago

Its not just the fans, the heatsink fins sometimes get clogged with dust clouds. So check that too, usually i just pull out the fan and blast air through the exhaust vent.

    Hi all,

My laptop is now idling at 51 degrees, but when I use something like mytheatre it goes up to 100 degrees fairly quickly... this can't be right, the application only consumes 10% cpu.

Is it possible that I haven't applied the AS 5 properly?

Yes or the heatsink isnt seated flat on the cpu surface.

I'm still having a lot of troubles with temperatures :(

Just now while I'm browsing a few sites using firefox the temp jumps from 62 to 75 degrees, the cpu usage is never more than 10%, firefox is a resource hog, but this can't be normal surely..

    um, no

remove the 3 screws holding the fan in place, and pull it out (no need to disconnect from the motherboard, just put it on the side.

from the outside-in, blow compressed air on the vent. or just stick something in there to get all the dust buildup out.

its very easy to visually see if theres dust buildup once you look in there with the fan out.

if you just look at the vent from the outside, it looks like nothing is there, when 3/4 of the heat sink is covered with dust (ask me how i know)..

on a side note, did those come with a 8600m?

Yes, it seems the fan can easily be removed on this model, so definitely try to remove the fan and directly remove the dust bunnies from in there.
