    Hi forum members,

A few years back, there was a GSOD, BSOD problem with the G73 series laptops. They also would BSOD when attempting to install updated ATI mobility drivers.

Chastity pointed to the v93 vBios and with a few modifications I added, I was able to flash it to my MSI 5850m GPU. Worked great and solved the above problems, BUT, I lost HDMI output. Going back to the older vBios and my HDMI output was restored.

Does anyone know the changes that Chastity (?) added to the 5870m vBios for the G73, which remedied the GSOD, BSOD and driver update problems? I'd like to similarly modify a 5850m MSI vbios.

Also, what would be the best bios editor to use? I've used RBE, but don't know if there's better options.

    Thanks

Have a look at both with radeon bios editor, it's likely down to clock/voltage level differences.

On my way to bed and thanks Meaker. I think it's a little deeper than that, although you could be right. Somehow the modded bios removed the problem with BSODs when attempting to load newer AMD/ATI drivers from the AMD site as opposed to the old versions from the vendor(s)
( either MSI or ASUS ) site. I'll take a look more closely tomorrow. Appreciate the idea.

I think it was a 2d clock state with a voltage too low for the chip to handle IIRC.

Hmm, I am a techie type, but not sure what IIRC is in reference to GPUs. Any idea where I can view that spec in a bios editor or hex dump?

    Thanks Meaker.

Hey thanks Meaker! You pointed me in the right direction. Using RBE I matched the clock speed & power saving voltage profiles to the ASUS bios. That's all that was needed to get the 5870m or 5850m MSI vbios to play nice with newer drivers.

Excellent info and appreciate it. Good w/e to you.

I was raiding my memory banks and this is reaching back a bit. Glad it got you sorted.
