this screen is about as impressive as vista gets.
The game running is prey.

ok actually this screen is even more impressive.
the mini picture that pops up over the tab, its actually moving. The little picture is actually showing the game in real time.
prey ran great. oblivian wouldnt run at all but it wouldnt suprise me if oblivian has a vista patch mine wasnt updated at all.

We did a clean install of Vista and installed Oblivion on my brother's machine last week. Seemed to run fine, even before applying the latest Oblivion patch or drivers from ATI.
-
Just curious stamar, how is your battery life impacted after running on vista ? How would you compare it to xp? Does aero impact it that much? Thanks.
-
Is Vista really faster than XP? or is it a memory hog?
-
It says looking for dll something.
Did you use vista drivers? Heres the thing, vista comes out of the box with standard vga drivers on the a8js because it doesnt detect the hardware. So the only vista drivers I can use are from laptopvideo2go.com with the modded inf.
So right at this moment oblivian doesnt start for me.
No tests on battery life. To run aero you need to be in the highest battery consumption state though.
I dont like the vista battery control program at all whether its good or bad. It overrides all gpu clocking programs even when its on AC. Something else to just tune though....
Some things definitely run faster.
I tried to do an eyeball test using fraps and running Prey in a window in xp and vista. In Vista I think it not only ran faster or at least the same, but it was much more stable going in and out of windows and switching.
vista uses 500 mb. Youll need 2 gb right out of the box. Im running it on 1gb but ordered the other gb. Using the ram is what makes it faster
Vista doesnt need any patch like xp does to use the 2nd core. I THINK that in the situation I tested it runs faster.
Tests that show it slower are actually using aero and the game full screen. Ok well using 300 mb less ram and running a 3d application in the background is a test thats going to show its slower....
The truth in a nutshell is this: Vista is xp with a lot of add ins. You can make tests to make it look good and make it look bad. -
When we installed it on his machine, I think it picked up the x850 video card he had and used an internal driver, but it did show as an X850, not Generic.
Last night I updated the ATI drivers on my W3j to the latest Vista beta drivers from ATI. 3dMark seemed ~200 points lower than when I first ran it after Vista install, but it's OK for now and I'm sure ATI will release another round of Vista drivers soon now that RTM is out. -
Hi stamar, I have vista (final) installed and do not run it because of the following, maybe you can help me. No doubt it runs great, and has many nice new things.
1. Sound is not working. Where did you get the drivers from?
2. Video, what drivers are you using? Some games (half life 2, oblivion) work for me, others do not (Doom 3).
There is another problem which reaaaally hurts bad, my schools email system is Outlook Web and IE crashes on it. Amazing, eh?
Nice. Rebooting. -
interesting, I'd like to hear experiences from people running Vista on the ATI xSeries cards like the W3J and F3JP
-
-
I installed vista x64 ultimate on a8js and almost everything worked fine
The latest drivers from laptopvideo2go.com were good.
Sound is working, but I can't get external microfone working at all. It's only recognizing the internal one :/ I would like to use a good external one for voice recognition. It worked well with the internal microfone, but I think it would be even better with a good external one
I'm only missing software like NHC or RMclock. But I got no hurry to switch to vista, because XP is working extremely well atm -
-
Good observation Mats. Quake 4 is also OpenGL, right? Will try that as well.
Anyone knows how I can get sound to work, what driver to install? -
I would switch to vista right now if my software ran.
I like it.
Too many programs cause bsods and just dont run.
All of them will be updated within a month of the release Ill be all vista by then.
Im talking about all the utilities and programs i use too many to list. Example fraps 3dmark 05 06, disk keeper ( defragmenter in vista is horrid. I tried home though i bet the ultimate has a real one) etc etc.....
When the software is compatible Im sold I like it. -
Just got sound to work (was checking for driver update online - which did not work a couple of days ago - so I guess they added a driver).
For me the killer issue is IE crashing on OWA (which is ridiculous, considering OWA is a MS product!). That surprises me so much... makes me think its an issue with my specific computer/installation rather than an issue with Vista itself.
None of my utilities cause it to crash - but then again, I dont use those you mentionI also like it.
-
So is there any real reason to upgrade to Vista yet? Aside from it looking better. Because right now it seems like it takes up more memory, runs games slower, programs are not all designed for it yet, and there's no real performance upgrade. Or am I missing something?
-
I think I am going to jump on the vista bandwagon.
So will I need Power management software like NHC or will vista manage it fine? -
um
vista will not allow you to use a power management software
its own is ok.
I have a feeling though that if we get some sort of asus vista, that it will come with a vista power4gear overrides vistas own. -
I got vista x86 on, i couldnt take x64 with all the unidentified devices.
Vista x86 is annoying me too because i cant use the WiFi button to turn off the wifi. -
How does vista handle running aero on battery mode when the graphics is at a minimum or disabled?
-
Usually i can get 3.5hrs out of my A8JS with wifi, and working on word documents or on internet.
But with vista x86 doing the same things, im only able to get about 2.5- 2.75hrs max. -
The battery control program in vista is just bad for a lot of reasons.
Count on there being a vista version of power4gear when we get the release. Were messing around with the rtm, asus will ship a version with its programs like splendid and such. -
Im actually using Vista Business version. its the official release from Microsoft. I dont think ill be converting anytime soon, next week i will reformat and go back to XP.
Until Vista get new drivers and new programs especially the x64 version. I have both Full releases from Microsoft. -
Same as mine.
what you have to understand is that even though vista comes with battery management software built in that all notebooks come with a different program installed in windows.
so while xp comes with no battery management software vista does come with something that does that.
Only its real bad because its not very smart and it causes incompatibilities.
The final realease we get will be different than rtm in that it will have vista version of power4gear most likely and will probably perform better.
I havent been playing with vista for a while now but I was of the opinion that about 80% of my problems were incompatibilities with the power management program -
There are a lot of great things about vista and laptops.
Something you should check out bbc is the new suspend function.
You probably noticed that its instant, doesnt take a minute to think about it or prepare just click and its off.
But check out how much power it uses. Over 8 hour periods it takes 2% of my battery.
In xp it would take a lot more Im not even sure how much because my laptop never made it through 8 hours before.
Ive been testing this in dual boots. I think the entire difference is just that its a much lighter suspend, the computer is really not on and wont switch to hibernate. -
What's the best version of vista for A8Js? 32 or 64 Business?
Thanks -
Do you find that the built in microphone is not as sensitive anymore? My voice is picked up at a lower volume than on XP.
-
What's the difference between both 32 and 64bit? is it only speed of applications?
sorry to bother
Thanks you -
i had both vista on 32 and 64 bit. when i installed vista 64, my merom cpu detected it on device manager. can not find complete drivers for running 64 bit os. i crashed vista when i nstalled alcohol 120 on both 32 and 64 bit os. had a problem also on intel wireless card connecting to a linksys wrt54gl running on dd-wrt firmware. signal is week compared with win xp pro.
-
Makes me happy that i didnt buy a vista preloaded notebook, we can go back to xp if we find a lot of problems right? Then later intall vista again? Im planning to get the 64bit version.

My issues on Vista are solved, it is working fine except for a couple of things (so, I am back to XP for the time being, using Vista on ocassions). These are more pet-peeves than killers, since I don't play much and I am never far from a power outlet, but nevertheless:
- 3D performance is much less than XP and image quality is ugly. Using latest drivers from laptopvideo2go.com. Oblivion works, but looks ugly (not terrible, but atmospheric effects look bad, textures when close look 'rugged' - bumpmapping is all wrong, etc).
- Power control does not work - fan is on all time full speed, etc. I use my laptop on battery all day, so this is important. Sure, the new suspend feature is great, but having no good ACPI control drains my battery quick. Notebook Hardware Control does not work (blue screens), Power 4 Gear does but brings other issues (resolution change when coming back from suspend, etc).
Great OS from MS, its just the normal process of getting drivers and software up to date as on any new OS update. -
How much memory does it say your go7700 has? In vista x64 RC2 it says that i have like 739 mb graphics memory, 512 dedicated 227 shared. i wonder if it happens to anyone else? i'm using asus's official vista x64 drivers.
vista on my a8js
