    Hi all,

I'm a recent purchaser of the amazing w2v. I've been playing around with it and plan of doing a quick little review once I've tried everything.
However right now i'm having some issues with shutting down the computer in that is takes forever. By forever I mean anywhere upwards of 5-8 minutes.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks

... it's trying to close all your open programs..... check the task manager to see what's running.... there's a lot that's running out of the box on the W2 and if you add spyware and stuff to that (I don't know what you may have gotten into), but that would just make it take longer..

Your right there are a bunch of programs running. How do I know which ones are needed and which ones aren't and how do I stop them everytime.
As for spyware, I just got the machine and have been to a very limited number of sites.

    Thanks for your help

Sounds like the Page File is clearing during shut down. That will definitely add minutes to your shut down time.

I use a great little program calle TuneXP - you can get it at majorgeeks.com. It lets you do all kinds of misalleanous tweaks - and toggling the page file is one of them - get it if only to disable that page file from clearing. ;)

You can also use msconfig to turn off enay unwanted application the turn on with windows. Start>Run>msconfig on the startup tab.

That was my first thought as well, even though Windows does not do it by default. Either way, TuneXP is a great place to start if you want to trim down your startup/shutdown times.

    Thanks for all the advice.
    I'll definate try this.
Only thing is how do I know which programs I will actually need compared to those that I can get ride of.

Also I'm having issues with my audio, in that it keeps saying there is no audio device being detected. Usually happens when I come back from hibernation.

The comp is also running at 62degrees celsius according to asus prob which seems high. Is this normal

    Thank again in advance.

I've tried the tweaks and ridding my startup programs that I don't need. I have tried to download tunexp but it keeps freezing during its setup process and I'm still getting shutdown times of 8 minutes. Anyone else having this issue. I need help.

I guess the last option would be to do a full reformat of the system.. but I guess you don't want to lose your information.
Hmm... it could be a driver issue as well... it could be anything, to be honest.
Try disabling almost ALL of the non-essential services and then shutdown. If it's fast...you know ONE of them is causing it.

Btw, 62 degrees celsius is reasonable... although it could be lower.

Getting rid of not needed programs is a must in my book.
I don't recommend, in general, to use an optimizing program.

Here's a list of how little is starting on my mashine (w2w with xp, and mobile theater), it may help you to find more program that is not needed to start every time.

All programs that's disabled is either totally unnessesarry, and therefore uninstalled, or can be started manually through shortcuts, or the control panel, when needed.

*Some of the processes related to Intel wireless, may not be needed, but it has been hard finding good detailed info about those, so for now they get to live.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I decided to use the recovery cds and reinstall everything back to the factory state. Considering I had just got it, didn't really having anything on it anyways. So now it shuts down just fine (keeping fingers crossed that it stays like this).
However what happens is that is shuts down normally then 5 to 10 seconds later it just decides to turn itself on.

    Anyone had this before?

    Thanks again.

Do you have this hooked up to a network w/ an ethernet cable? You can set most systems to "power on over lan" which is technically for a system admin to start up all systems in the morning..... but I've seen some SoHo routers do the same thing randomly..... maybe this is the issue?

Maybe you already know this, but I had the same problem. Somehow some adware got through my defenses and turned the darned thing to a pool of quicksand. It didn't only turn off slowly, but every program became more or less unresponsive.

So, now you have everything up and running again, keep checking on adware and other infectious matter.

A great tool to really clean your system without re-installing everything is Hitman Pro, it's a free tool that runs all the latest spyware as an automated script on your system.

You can get it here: Link

Thanks for the advice everyone it still is shutting down as normal so looks like a reinstall was all the was needed (knock on wood).

As for the turning itself back on ProPortable you were right on the money there. My internet connection is set up through my LAN port and it had a setting for Wake on LAN. Turned it to None and it stayed off. Thanks.

One more problem i'm having though is that sometimes when I start the computer the audio does not work, i restart and it works fine. Whats going on here?
