since the w3j with merom is coming out soon, is it worth waiting for it to come out so the price of w3j yonah would go down or should i just get a a8jm?

It's fun that the same question gets asked every time a new model has been out for a few months (the last time I answered this was in early July) - but the turnover here is pretty high and so the question is, certainly, welcome.

Asus pretty much never drops the pricing on their existing Ensemble models. They either upgrade the components and keep the same price (refresh of the W3J), or issue rebates on older models to clear stock that used the older components to clear the way for refreshed models (if they're in the pipeline) or to help flagging sales rates. The W3j has been selling like crazy, with most resellers having little to no residual stock when it does make it into the US, so the chances of a rebate to clear leftover stock when next refresh with Core 2 Duo comes out in the next month or two are likely slim to none.

The rule should be buy when you need it, and most people will agree the W3j has several advantages in terms of materials and construction over the A8j, even though they're both Ensemble models. Benchmarks between yonah and merom are fun to look at, but the fact is that 95+% of users are never going to use them in such a way that they'll appreciate a functional difference between them (and the benchmarks are only 10% or less anyway). But, if you can wait for the C2D to make it into Asus' line, do so.

I've read the advice "buy when you need it" recited a lot on these forums, and in the majority of cases it makes a lot of sense. I think it should be adjusted a little for the W3J though to "Buy when you bloody well find one!".

The price will not be drop much instantly after Merom models release, all the Merom fans will not care the previous models low price or not if they really expect the new cpu arrive. Normally, the gadget in technology is going to have a price cut while a new models that have more powerful function release in the market, then the old models will be destined a price cut.
    Cheers

The prices are etched in stone.

The price point will never change, but the specs will.

When the W3(?) with Merom comes out, the W3j's price will be the same but expect ASUS to release Mail in Rebates.

Asus rebates and possibly reseller rebates/discounts (come time to move old stock) are your only hope.

If Asus lowers their MSRP, they are effectively reducing the value of their laptops.

About how long will it take for the rebates to come out after the W3J w/ Merom comes out that is if there even is a rebate.
