Ok so i think i deciding to get a W3J now.. because well, i can't wait till late october.

so i'm just curious why people are waitin for the refreshed model.. is it just for the core2duo?

danny from milestonepc posted that it will be
    W3J 14"W / T5600 / 1GB / 100GB / SuperMulti / ATI X1600 256M / XPPro $1799

Most people will want an upgrade to T7600 anyways because i don't think people will likely be using the T5600. So why don't people just buy it now and upgrade to T7600 or better sometime next year when prices are low considering 64 bit processors won't be of use until next year and later.

So is there something i'm missing ?

the video card seems to be the SAME? or is there going to be a X1650 or X1700? everything danny posted is same except for processor.. so should i just BUY the cheapest processor (T2400) now.. instead of waitin 2months.. and just use it for 1year and upgrade? the current w3j's can upgrade to merom right? sorry for all these dumb questions hehe does anyone see a difference or know of a difference except for the CPU difference between the current W3J and the refreshed one?

If you upgrade in the future, you will void your warranty with Asus. If you buy one later, with merom (core duo 2) then it will be 64 bit ready for the future. Core Duo 2 is not only 64 bit but is also faster.... up to 20% faster, depending on what you’re doing with it. I think the video card will be the same.

well the warranty only last 1year.. and that is around the time i'll probably require an upgrade.. and yea i heard its 20% faster for like those graphical work / editting but most i'll be doing is compiling some java programs and playing games... but if it had a refreshed card.. say x1650 then i probably would wait the extra 2months.. anyone have inside info on the video card? hahaha prob not.. worth a try

how is core 2 duo faster? I thought it was just core duo + 64bit support.
And asus normally comes with a standard 1 year warrenty. Since you really won't need it until a year or two from now.

I'm waiting for the refreshed model simply because of the group discount from milestonepc, and because I really wasn't even planning on buying a computer until several months from now.

You're probably a year away from Vista being stable and major apps taking advantage of 64 bit as well. Anyone know if Santa Rosa will be as plug and play as C2D is?

Also, what would people choose for the same price today.
    2.33 Ghz Core Duo
    1.86 Ghz Core 2 Duo

    Just curious...

I would rather be operating on the 2.33 core duo.
However, if I was buying a expensive one now, that I'm planning on using for the next 3-6 years, then I might lean towards the core 2 duo.
I'd rather have the 1.66 core duo and save like $500

I was actually considering upgrading my whole W3J just to get the Duo 2 under full warantee and I have a mate in NZ that would buy my W3J, but if they are only comming out with the lower speed processor, I am just going to wait till next year when my warantee runs out, then plump for the fastest Duo2 chip and slot it in myself (which by then will probably be quite cheap!)

Anyway the new version will have the same chipset and components so essentially the system is the same!

And as others have said you wont see the full benefit of 64bit somputing untill the software catches up, trust me I am running winXP64 edition on a new Duo core 2 desktop

    Dell Precision PWS390
    2.00 GB RAM
    Intel E6600 4MB L2 2.40GHz, 1066Mhz
    XP Extreme 64 Bit
    Seagate, Cheetah Ultra320 SCSI 15000rpm
    NVIDIA Quadro FX 3450/4000 SDI

finding drivers is a NIGHTMARE wait for Vista, by the time it is released at least there will be plenty of drivers available

i was on the group buy when it first started, then decided there was no way I was gonna wait till end of october for a laptop so i got my w3j 2 weeks ago. I figured Id upgrade to merom and get vista when the first service pack comes out sometime next year. And when i hear talk of november for w3j + t7200, im not regretting my decision at all. :) I also got my laptop from g2p since I didnt want to pay the cali tax that came with MilestonePC purchases although i would recommend both resellers to anyone. Hope this helps.

I couldn't wait either, and when I saw the W3J- is coming with the T5600 C2D in late October I decided to go ahead with the W3J+. Got mine on Monday and its been great!

yeah the w3j- gets shafted..it doesn't even get the minimum t7200..better to upgrade it yourself after the warranty expires

I'll probably do the same thing when next June rolls around. I do think the W3J is a great looking and performing machine, though, even without the C2D, so if you need it now go and get it (even without the newest proc) but if you can wait, then wait for the next upgrade.

Will you be able to upgrade the current W3J with a T7200? I mean, does it use the same socket as the current processor (T2500)?

Yes, you will. What you want to be careful about, is if upgrading the processor will void your warranty.

The only reseller I know of that allows you to keep your warranty after upgrading the CPU, is www.btotech.com . You do need to obtain written permission first, however. I bought from them, great service :)
