Is it normal for the Asus w3v (or any notebook) to vibrate on the handrest.. It's very slight but I can feel it vibrating. The computer is at 35 degrees celsius (it's cold outside and i've undervolted... I assume that's the reason).
Maybe someone can rest my paranoia please![]()

Is it just the optical drive spinning?
-
Which handrest?
It's probrably the Optical Drive, or the Hard Drive... -
It's both sides... And I have no cd inside... nothing should be spinning :S
Could it be the fact that the fan is off and it's cold? I dont know.. Is it a defect.. I never noticed it before (i've never been in this sort of environment with it either.)
It's a very slight vibration , but still noticable -
It's funny...cuz my HP DV1000 has same issue.
It vibrates on both sides of palm rest ( actually more on optical drive side )
Of course nothing is inside of the drive.
It's like a humming noise... -
Do you know what it is?
Does anyone know what it could be?
It's very annoying and I would like to know if it's a permanent problem
p.s its annoying because I don't know if it's a flaw or not. if it was a normal thing on all notebooks then i would be fine with it -
I dont have any vibration on my W3v ...
-
so if you feel the right or left side of the touchpad there is no movement at all?
-
I dont have any vibration on my W3v. Sorry
-
Just incase people are looking for a heavier vibration.. I'm talking about something very minute..
Are your w3v's absolutely still? Is there ANY movement.. Thanks -
yeah, i can feel it. but i have to put effort into it to be able to feel it. its the harddrive.
-
It doens't take much effort for me
Is it possible that my hard drive is vibrating too much? What could be a reason for this happening (could i have damaged it?)
-
to give you some idea, i can feel my pulse more than i can feel any vibration from the palm rest area, or anywhere else, so it is extremely negligible.
Id say if its as noticeable as you describe, you might have a problem with your unit. -
I'm writing this on the W3v and I can honestly tell you I feel no vibration whatsoever. The fan is on but very quiet, probably on the lowest speed possible. I have no disc in the optical drive.
If anything, a cold environment should help run the system cooler, thus lowering fan speed and overall temp. readings. I can't think of a reason it should cause vibrations.
Is it constant or only when you have read/write activity on the HD? If it's all the time and it's bugging you... you should have the unit checked. -
If you have an external hard drive (or one of your friends have), try putting your hand on that. If it's simmilar to this, it's probably just your hard drive spinning away, which is normal.
I have a V6V, and i can feel also feel the hard drive spinning. But like most others, I have to put an effort into it.
Have you done anything to the hard drive speed? I know some programs let you use "spin-down" and other features to save battery. This could be the source of your problem... -
I don't have access to an external hard drive but i did get a chance to feel my friends acer travelmate c100.. The vibration is much lighter on his computer...
I'm usng a program called CPU clock utility.. it keeps the cpu low when the computers not using too many resources to save battery and heat... Could this be the problem?
By the way, the vibration is most noticable on the right palm rest right near the bottom edge. -
Is a noticable vibration a good enough excuse for asus to accept repair / replacement?
-
It will depend on how severe it is, which is, unfortunatley, very relative.
If I out a CD in the drive I feel a vibration for a couple seocnds while its spiing around. Then for maybe 15 seconds after that when the CD is still spinning slowly. But after that. Nothing. -
Yeah it's hard to say if it'll be a good enough "excuse"... i would think it would have to be quite a severe vibration, but i've never had to deal with
a repair/replacement issue with Asus.
The travelmate you compared to, did it run at the same rpm? (4200, 5400 or 7200)?
I honestly don't think you have a problem, but it's hard to say. You say that the vibration is heavier at the right palmrest, which is (as you probably know) where the hard drive is placed. The best thing would be to compare it with another w3v, but this will probably be hard to do... -
What's the difference between a higher rpm and a lower one?
Anyways this problem has just come about last few days.. So it can't be a standard thing.
So far, i've compared it to the asus travelmate and the sony s series. My asus vibrates much more than either.
By the way, is there any way I can check how fast the hard disk is spinning? maybe it's spinning too slowly.
And, if the hard disk is damaged, will buying a new one fix the problem? -
Thank you all for you input. Turns out the hard disk was faulty... Man asus service SUCKS. I sent my Asus w3v back complaining about vibrations, and specifically pointing out the hard disk.. A week later they send it back with a replaced dvd rom! I ended up having to buy a new hard disk myself.. Thanks asus!

Having to buy a new hard drive was certainly your choice..... but I would still send the drive back to Asus and have them look at JUST that and send you JUST a new drive back.
w3v slight vibration
