well after downloading a bunch of HDTV shows encoded with Xvid I decided to check out how it looks on the big screen (30in...so not too big) and it looks fanxxxtastic. Albeit I have to reduce the w3v resolution down to 800x600 so than in full screen mode, the entire tv screen is filled up. I used WMP to playback the avi.
The image on the tv is just so damn good. Even close up I don't get that interlaced look. I'm sure outputting DVDs to the teli using the svideo out would look just as good as a standalone player. I did playback a DVD rip and it looks no different.
I thought I'd post this because I think there was some discussion about this a long time ago and I posted a small post about the desktop didn't look too clear and someone asked how playing media would look and I never got back to it.
I download tons of foreign programs and shows that take weeks to come out here and now I can just download HDTV captures of the show and take it anywhere and play it on the television. Good stuff, now if I can just find a good use for the PMCIIA slot I'd be utilitizing the w3v to the fullest.
And for good measure, :asus:

Well, that's one way to do it........ this is what I do.. it's not the easiet to set up, but when you set it up it's ideal for what bugmenot is saying......
If you set up a dual view........ dual view allows two desktops...... the second desktop could be the tv and you could set that up for 800 x600 (regular ratio) while your notebook stays widescreen. I don't know if it's the regular ati drivers that you can set this up in... or if it's the omega drivers... but you should be able to set up the program that you may want this movies to play to open fullscreen on just the second desktop.......... This would allow you to use your notebook as you normally would... going online, emailing.... i bet maybe even gaming..... while through the s-video you play those movies to your tv..... -
oh sorry i didn't make myself too clear. yea proport that's what i have setup. when i have the svideo connected the second screen automatically enables and it's resolution is set to 800x600.

Ok, so we're all good then? Pretty neat how you can do that, isn't it? I used to do that with my desktop all the time where I'd port out to my big tv for gaming and movies................. while sometimes still sitting on the computer doing my work while other people were enjoying the movies and games.

so i managed to use the supplied s-video and rca adapter to hook it up w/ my tv but i was wondering if there's any way i could do to make sound comin out from the TV speakers instead of from the notebook speakers? 'cause with dvd playing (for some reason) the speaker sound is pretty much inaudible.
any way to solve that too?

Only if you can feed a mini rca to rca cable from your headphone/ S/PDIF jack to your tv....... that should work fine.

The easiest way to do that, IMO, is to get a little Y-adapter that converts 2 mono signals (the red and white plugs) into one stereo signal, you can then just plug it into the headphone jack. The adapters are like $5 at Radio Shack and work fine, I did it with my W3V and it definitely works and plays the sound from my TV.
The other problem you mentioned (that DVD audio on the W3V is almost inaudible) is something that has really bothered me with this notebook. I tried all sorts of settings and a couple different kinds of DVD software (AsusDVD and Intervideo WinDVD). You can see my review over on geared2play.com's forum where I bring this up. It's the only problem I have with this otherwise awesome notebook. I went out and bought an external sound card (the Turtlebeach Audio Advantage Micro, $30 at Circuit City) which works awesome for boosting audio output. I wish I could use it to drive the built-in speakers, but either it won't or I can't figure out how. The thing that gets me is that it's just a little plastic thing, smaller and lighter than my USB thumb drive, I wish they could've squeezed a similarly powerful sound card into the W3V.
Anyhow, I'm a long time reader, first-time poster, thanks for everyone on this forum and the great information they have provide. -

True.... sometimes you can even find a new right angle adapter (for both s-video and the y-splitter) and that helps make for a nice clean set up.

So you guys have figured out the settings so that if you plug a tv into the W3V it automatically sets the TV at the correct resolution while keeping the 1280x768 on the laptop LCD?
If so please share because using the latest Omega drivers my TV can't fit everything on screen using Clone mode because its max resolution is 1024x768. When you cursor to the right of screen the screen shifts.
The best solution I have so far is to set my laptop resolution to SXGA and then the two screens correspond. Also I would like to know how I can do adjustments to the second moniter so I can make the image match my TV more perfectly.
Up untill now I've been used to doing TV out with NVIDIA drivers so maybe I'm not unleashing the fullest potential of ATI, else the radeon drivers still have a way to go. Any help with would be much appreciated. -

First, you don't want to clone.. if you have a regular ratio tv, 800x600 is all it's going to support...... You don't want to clone, you want to set up a dual desktop. The latest omega drivers suck in my opinion and the new ones that should be out shortly are going to incorperate a lot more and will be better to use.... for now, stock is the way to go.
If you do a clone view you're going to have to lower the res and change the ratio on your main screen and that's going to distort everything on the computer screen till you turn it back. -
Very cool feature... Thank you, I will try this when I get my W3V next week
