Hello all
Im looking to buy a new laptop. My gateway crapped out on me. horrible service from gateway too. Which is besides the point.
I'm a grad student in CS. So I spend A LOT of time in front of the computer. Surf the web, games, and programming. I've never had a widescreen notebook and was wondering if the wide screen will be bad for programming or doc reading since i would see less text vertically. Wondering if any people have similar issues with docs and code.
So my choice is the w3v or V6v which pretty much seem similar save the screen.

Just had a thread on this.... http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=25454

ya ive been going thru the exact same decision.. tuff one as it is.
In the beginning I wanted the v6vk because of the resolution, but then i started to think about the better specs the w3v offers such as the better dvdrw, svideo, glossy, modular bay options etc.
I think im gonna sacrifice resolution for the mentioned above stuff.. -
i think you guys are confused on what I'm wondering about. I'm not concerned about the quality regarding trubrite, resolution, being indoors/outdoors etc.
I was just wondering about the specific issue of having less vertical space when you choose a wide screen. Any people getting annoyed at reading docs with regards to widescreens? any coders annoyed at looking at code on a widescreen?
why annoyed? because there is less lines of text to look at. more across yes. less up and down. -
that's funny, I brought a widescreen specifically to read docs better. actually specifically so I can put Excel and whatever-lab-program i'm using side by side and key in the data to an excel report easily.

well for shellcoding the SXGA will definetly be of use, but like i said for my prefernce, the w3v has better features that outweight the lack of a wsxga res. Justin hit it straight on when he said the asus v6v is a "supermodel".
Shellcoding on a 14" wxga should be no problem. if resolution is your #1 factor, then get the v6v.

papham, if you can wait a lil bit longer, asus has a 14.1" v6v stylee machine coming out in the near future.

eh I actually need it now. had to call my bank to up my max purchase price on my debit card so i can place the order asap. I'm giddy like a little girl.
-
I think the V6V will be a better choice for you. The extra resolution should be quite handy during programming...
-
i was thinking that too but i do have a nice desktop with a nice 19'. so this system wouldn't be my primary coding machine.

Well if it's not your main coding machine, I'd go smaller... Do you need dedicated graphics still or was that never a question?
-
oh yeah. I'm a gamer too. u were going to recommend the w5 right?

Haha... well.. that might be a little small.. but the S5 or Z33..... but like I said, it depends on what you're doing and trust me, even though the new W2 is like a luxury SUV of the computer world.......... the W3 is the high performance sports car that I prefer for my everyday performance and traveling needs, too.

sounds good. I hate lugging all my books plus another bag with my heavy notebook gear around campus. I mean I work out and all but it's tiring.
on a side note. Would like to tell a story about gateway customer service and knowledge base. this happened last year
problem: system freezes on occasion. think the cpu or mobo maybe even ram could be running on it's last legs. also hdd has many errors. still on warranty and also have accidental damage warranty. i believe it was due to the fact the internal fan stopped working and damaged the internals. reinstalled the os figuring it might be software. nope not software.
ok whatever it is
talk to tech. explain whole situation.
send out laptop. comes back in 3 days. I say wow. called tech see what they did. new hdd? ect ect. they told me they reformatted my system and installed new os. I was like huh. I still have the same problem about system freezes on new install and I've told them that I've already done that. they take it back. reinstall the system again send it back. Now I get mad. they don't even bother replacing my hdd. A tech tells me that is it difficult to replace a hdd in a laptop which then I nearly exploded. I said "WHAT?" it is not difficult to replace a notebook drive. He tells me to shut up, which blew my mind. He says he's going to hang up on me if I don't stop talking which I don't. He hangs up. I call back get a replacement drive which I install myself but still doesn't fix my system freezing issue. I gave up on the laptop. It is now just used for net surfing. no doc writing. nothing of importance can be done on that machine since it's unstable.
moral of the story: always always get their badge number. also seems to me companies will always honor their warranties until the system doesn't work anymore then stretch because your gonna do some hoop jumping.
and I will never get gateway again.
and I hate aol, they stole my money.
both companies are on my list.
and on a side side note
and Im excited to get my w3v -
So you chose the W3v... good choice. Honestly, you couldn't have gone wrong with either one...

yeah. I'll be buying another stick of memory asap. question about that tho. I hear that the laptop supports dual channel something or rather. Since I have 512x1 should I buy another 512 which would enable dual channel memory or can I buy a 1gig stick which will give me 1.5gigs of mem but I'm not sure if the memory will be dual channel anymore.
also I could be wrong about everything. thanks in advance. -
from what ive read, the performance increase when using 2 of the same sticks vs not, is not noticable. ive no idea if thats true, but thats what ive always read when poeple discuss that.
-
running RAM in "Dual Channel" has barely any real world performance gains.... it will, however, improve your benchmarks just a tad bit.
It's really more of a marketing gimmick than anything else...
