Greetings, board.
I'm looking into getting an ultraportable soon, and after lurking and reading here for a while I think I'm finally convinced to go for the W5 rather than the Lenovo. The question for me now is whether to wait for the Core Duo. I've been waiting a long time to get my new computer (the last one was stolen and I've been going through insurance adjuster hell) and I'm pretty anxious now that I've got my money to actually get it. But it sounds like the Core Duo will be improved performance for a similar price.
What does the board think? Any feedback from the vendors on-board about the price difference? What about timing? How early is early March (as printed in ProPortable's listing)?
Sorry if I'm a little obsessive here, but I've been computer-less now for over 6 months and its making me *crazy* having to sit here in this stupid lab.
Thanks for your help, and for sponsoring this board.

If you really aren't in a hurry, I think waiting for Core Duo would be a good idea. It IS almost March after all...(just a week away)
I would think sometime within the first 8-12 days of March would be considered "early" march -
You know, really its a battle between my higher brain and my reptilian one. I *know* rationally that it isn't that far away, but I've been waiting so long and the check just finally got mailed. Probably I'll wait, but I'll just be annoying to be around until its released. With the Core Duo supply problems of the past, I also worry about waiting and then finding everything back-ordered....

Well, in a hurry or not... on a system like the W5, are you really doing to need the core duo cpu? Also, I guess you have to figure in the rebates Asus has on the current models as well.
Also, just a note.... I believe the core duo W5's are going to come over in black first... and that makes a white option further away..... so if you're looking for white, either wait longer or consider the other options and look at the current model. This news about the black model came to me a little over a week ago and all I can get from Asus is that the first batch was ordered in black.... -
Personally, I think the black W5's are even better than the white

White is ok for girls but guys.... No.

The white is certainly targeted to the ladies.... without a doubt.... but keep in mind I like the pearl color models because they're different.... and I did a pearl W5 for a real man's man.... and I'm sure he'd love to hear it's a "girls color"

Well, pardon me... I made a mistake... sort of.
Someone from Asus just saw my post and said... nope, they're focusing on white still.... but then realized the last update they gave me did say black.
... but that's the offical word... white W5f.... napa updates are going to appear on my news sticky in a couple minutes. -
Isn't the lappy's for the Foose guys the white W5ae

That's sucks about his first.
I have to say your customized logos are amazing. -
Thanks for the info, Justin. I think I'll at least wait it out until they are released.
You're right, of course, I'm not positive I'll need the core duo. But I would like to do a little bit of pro-audio and Adobe CS2 work. Obviously an ultraportable isn't geared for this kind of work, but since I'm going to be moving somewhere every couple of months, for the next couple years, its more important to me that it be easily portable than blazingly fast. But going for the Core Duo might make up some of that difference.
At this point, though you can get a 19" LCD, 300 GB External HDD, keyboard and mouse and be almost desktop ready, in a pretty easily packed up accessories package. And I'm not sure I'll be giving up all *that* much with an ultra.
Its hard to say, I've always been a desktop guy in the past, because I could build my own (which is what turned me on to Asus as a company in the first place). But given the amount of travel and moving I'll be doing, it didn't make sense anymore. So I'm still finding my way on the notebook front.
Ultimately, I guess, the thing for me is whether waiting for the T2500 version will buy me an extra year or so of utility out of the thing before software outpaces it. That's worth waiting for if its true. -
If you really want a desktop replacement [notebook], then the Z83V or W2J would be your best bet. -
Thanks, C9.
The XPC looks pretty cool, but I need something that is function in class, or on the road, or sailing across the ocean. Which means an ultraportable is pretty important. I'm content to wait a little longer for things, than I would with a desktop, so I think the W5 will work well. -
Drop me a line if you need anything.
