Anyone have a suggestion on a brand DVD that will replace/fit in the stock location of my W5? The lack of playability on mine is driving me crazy - almost makes the laptop useless for me as a portable/travel system.

An external isnt an option for me as I dont want additional dangling components on the road.

Just a nice little optical drive that will screw into the existing chassis on my w5. I searched the forum but am sriking out on specific info related to this, just finding alot of other unhappy posts similar to mine.

    Thanks from a newbie!

................this drive has been a "piece of...." since Day 1 I bought the laptop. The mom-n-pop ASUS retailler shop I bought it from were no help with regards to replacing the drive and all I heard back from ASUS was to go thru my local retailer.

I ended up just dealing with holding the laptop upside down to get the drive to read and copying everything from the CD/DVD to the HD to run.

Hoping I can replace the drive on my own as I really love the little laptop other than the optical issue.

    Thanks for any advice.

guess now that I think about it, I should ask the question this way.........

Can I purchase any UJDA755 drive (ie made for Sony or Gateway, and fit it into my W5? I kow the face bezel might need some gluing or the like, mainly Im thinking overall use tho....

Since the W5 is an Ensemble, all warranty replacements should have been through Asus under the global warranty... Where in the world are you located?

How long ago did you purchase?

i am now in Washington state but I purchased the W5 new in Honolulu where I lived until last May. The unit is now about 16 months old. Even had the original 40gig HD die halfway into warranty period.

Live and learn.............. no biggie anymore, I just want to replace the optical drive.

I have alot of laptops and travel with two for work, but the w5 is so light and convenient, that I think its worth the $$ to replace the DVD drive.

You might drop MilestonePC, Proportable (Justin), or BTOTech/Geared2Play (Eddie), or any of the other vendors who frequent this forum an email and see if they have one around that they might part out for you, or know of a compatible drive.

It's a little slow around here due to the holidays so email is probably the best method of communications...

The little slimdrive Asus uses in the W5, Z33, etc is much thinner then a regular notebook optical drive, so it might be a little bit on the expensive side, just to forewarn you.

I agree it's worth it to fix though... <3 small laptops.
