NY times says "On the other end of the size spectrum, the Asus W5A ($1,649; www.asus.com), comes with a 12.1-inch screen, a 1.73-gigahertz Pentium M processor and a full-size keyboard. The device weighs about four pounds, and as with the Libretto, the display is a wide screen using the WXGA standard (for example, compared with conventional screens, you see more columns on a spreadsheet). The W5A has a built-in 1.3-megapixel Web camera and optical drive with a DVD player and CD-RW.

As with a few of the other new models, the W5A includes Intel's new generation of Centrino technology, which brings some speed and graphics enhancements, but no major improvements specifically for ultraportables. It has a white exterior of carbon fiber, and three U.S.B. ports - one in the back and one on each side. But the W5A is somewhat larger and heavier than most units with 12.1-inch screens." to read the whole article about other laptop NY TIMES compared with, go to NY times website.

they finally got that review up... super.

Idiots.... it's larger and heavier because it has a built in optical drive and like 3 different wireless adapters and a camera... and it comes with standard with it's double capacity battery... I love how reviewers never take that sort of stuff into account.

If Asus only made a W5a similar to the S5 which was basically just the computer, no optical drive.. no extra stuff.... but a 12" widescreen... it'd easily be a hair over 2 pounds.

    Thanks,
    Justin

No, I didn't send them a "review" unit. Someone from the "NY Times" did call me to get one and it sounded fishy so I said all demos were out of the office at the time. A couple days later we got an order that was shipped to the Times.... this was just after the W5 came out... so I'm going to assume it's the same one.

    Thanks,

did you send them that unit then Justin? Looks like they posted an article that's a, cough, "review" and needed to clear their newsroom of about 10 laptops so they lumped them all into one "review" and called it done.

here's a link to that by the way: http://tech2.nytimes.com/2005/05/26/technology/circuits/26basics.html?

Maybee someone should point this out to them. If i called em left wingers would i be starting a democratic debate here? Well there is a bright side of this. After people read their post they probably will not have any complaints about it on these forums becuase they will not buy it. Who reads the ny times here besides me anyways?

I don't think politics plays much into notebook reviews... but I don't know who is reviewing them anyway........ it's sad when some of these big time places have everyday office people give their reviews on something which really can affect a product especially if the person reviewing it doesn't know all of the ins and outs of a product. If you miss a couple things, you're in a whole different ballpark...... and you can't justify the price or the weight or whatever......

    Justin

Yeah, well I could have a field day talking about the people we've come in contact with..... the best guys that I have gotten to know are basically completely disbanded... all the guys from TechTV...... other than that and the guys here and over at laptop logic... There are some real "winners" out there...... We've gotten systems back with cookie crumbs in them.... and yet this is coming from a place that braged about their new multi-million dollar test lab and how it's all perfectly sterile or stuff like that.....

For every good, honest, unbiased review and reviewer....... there is a crooked editor..
