Every W5 to date (since it's introduction about 23 months ago) have come with glaretype displays.

oh...so that means there's a reflection? that stinks. i don't like glossy because once you step into a room with fluorescent lights or outside, you can't see a thing on the screen.

Personally I wouldn't take a matte screen outside either. Under fluorescent sure, but outside it's not really a performer either.

Both glaretype and antiglare have their advantages. Antiglare manages to look decent under direct sunlight and also flourescent lighting, but they are usually much dimmer and duller than glaretypes; glaretypes excel everywhere else, with higher brightness and contrast, but they are esentially useless under direct lighting and flourescents.

what if i was to put a 3M privacy filter on the screen? would that make it less reflective?

Everyone needs to get the whole "reflection" thing out of their minds..... it's not an issue... You get a reflection when you don't have a backlight that can be set higher than your ambient light. All Asus systems have great backlights and they can overpower pretty much anything under the sun (no pun intended).... besides maybe the sun itself. Now, the reason everything is becoming going glaretype is because of the better contrast and color reproduction and the always lacking - true blacks.. They're better displays and basically fully replace what the big crt's did better than lcd's......
When the system is off and you have no light coming from behind, yes you'll see yourself like a mirror...... But what these screens are like, as I often compare them, is a two-way mirror...... like we all see in the cop shows. If there is no light on in the one room, the perp sees his reflection...... If they turn the light on in the other room, you'll see a little reflection and also see through. If the light in the other room is brighter, you'd be able to see see clear as day.
Basically..... that's how it works.. and basically, if you have a high brightness screen, it's not an issue. That's one thing Asus is sure to have.
