This laptop is the reason why I scour this forum for info. Anyone have any speculative release date or speculative pricing information?

It's quite a nice option...I wouldn't mind seeing it in all black though...could be very popular with W5 fans that want/need more in the graphics department.

Nice pics, thanks for posting them :)

When it comes (and notice I didn't say "if"), but it's more than likely coming in black....... The W5 is going to have the S6 right below it and the W7 right above it.... two close to have either coming in the same color........ but we'll see.

I just have two concerns: What's up with that "up to 1GB" line and what is the gfx memory size.

It's the dedicated graphics that sets those three apart...at least for many it will.

The up to 1GB, could mean it will come with 512MB stock, with an open slot option for basically 1.5GBs total...or it could just be a mistake??? :)

If It's more than likely coming in black to North America...I'd really appreciate some pics. I love these smaller machines in black.

I think you might have mentioned a timeframe on the W7 in the past...but can you give us a rough ETA on it one more time Justin? Thanks :)

Looks like an SZ minus the Sony BS and Sony quality. I'd be in if only I wasn't looking for a something better in the graphics department.

If for some reason the w3j doesn't work out, here I come w7j.

..... Asus makes Sony's laptops...... if you want to subtract sony's "quality", you should know that Asus' systems are typically of a better quality than sony's, mainly because Asus is putting their name on them and not only wants they best, but they can build whatever they want because the "bottom line" isn't as important for Asus who is in a niche market and just wanted to make great systems... where as it's a HUGE deal for Sony and Apple and other companies that hire Asus as an ODM..

........... Summer Release..... I can't go any further than that.

Does anyone know the capability of the 7400? Like, what levels it could play BF2 and Doom 3 at?

Shoot, a summer release? This machine seems to be closest competition to Sony's SZ, which is relatively cheap ($1450).. i wanted to be be able to compare the two models, but if I have to wait til summer for essentially the same specs as the SZ, i don't know if I can do it. Unless the price were competitive on the w7j, but I have a feeling that that might not be the case..
Dang, i wish there were fewer reported issues with the SZ.. just no solid options at the moment.

The cheap model of the sony sz is that cheap. but if you want the magnesium model its like 1900.

I knew Asus made other company's laptops but I wasn't sure of which ones they made. My qualm with Sony's quality isn't as much with their laptops but their other products, especially their Playstations.

When I was seriously looking at getting the SZ there were some pretty bad quality issues. Some guy had to return one twice for hard drive issues. In all likelihood this is nothing Asus has any hand in. Sony is probably the one to throw in the **** ram and the **** hard drive once it gets over here or at least that is what I have often been told to believe... Quality, as you implied, comes down to more than just putting the pieces together corrrectly. Quality is using the best pieces or even just the better ones and not the cheapest ones.

But you're definitly right about Asus, I would never dream in a million years that Sony or any of those other brands selling at Bestbuy would come with 667 ram. It seems to me that Asus, as you said, makes the best product they feel that they can and that is something I appreciate.

man, i was really tempted to go for the W5F but was waiting for it to come in black and now i see this!
Asus is really booming in the US....summer is not that far around the corner and seems worth the wait to check out this model and compare it to the W5F before purchasing.
anyone have an idea on price?

    also forgot to ask:
if this comes with a better graphics card and not an integrated graphics like the W5F, does it mean that Vista will work better on this machine?
    thanks

Vista will not really run better. But you will be able to use certain aero visuals on this machine that the w5f wouldnt be able to do. Because the intergrated graphics doesnt support all the visual features vista will have. I forgot the specific technical thing its lacking though.

Nice notebook! I new Asus made the SZ's and i must say, i like them. I do not game at all but, i do want to buy a notebook that'll easily run Vista. The 13.3" screen offers just the right amount of portability i'm looking for as well.. The W7J will remain on my short list for sure.

I sure hope they release this model soon, I would really like a new laptop and this seems like an excellent fit for my needs. I agree with many of th posts here - I would also prefer a black case to hide the war injuries.

I looks like a great notebook. I'm unsure of the colour though, but I'd probably need the W6F side-by-side with it to see which I prefer.

The thing is with only up to 1GB of RAM, this notebook seems very limiting. Supposedly Vista will need at least 1GB for decent performance with 2GB preferred. Even the W6F can get up to 1.5GB since it has 512MB integrated.

ASUS never sells items 'themselves', though there are some exceptions.

You go to dealers who are authorized to order laptops, some places have pro-orders as well.

Does anybody know when it will be available?
    I don't know what I should do...
... buy the W6F or wait for the W7J...
Another option might be the W3J, but in my eyes it looks quite ugly...

It's interesting that the W7J would offer up to a 2.16 GHz Core Duo processor while the W3J will only go up to 1.86 GHz...

It's probably because the W3J is being released very soon while the supposed release date of the W7J is in the Summer, which is very near or possibly after the release of Merom.

Please post a link showing Merom possibly being released as you speculate. Everything i've read points to Merom being released much later in the year (November) for business, '07 for consumers.

I hope we don't have to wait so long for the W7J!
Or is the information firmed that the W7J comes with Intel's Memrom?

Merom isn't even out yet; don't expect to see laptops with it until a while after it comes out.
As listed in specs, W7J will have a core duo.

I hope the W7J doesn't come with Intel's Memrom, so we don't have to wait untill winter 2006

I would prefer a release in june/july this year! :D

You're right. After seeing your reply, I googled it and found out they moved the release date back to Q4. I just assumed that the ship times shown when I did my researching back pre-Yonah were still correct.

I saw some note about Asus making the next ibooks. I hope that doesn't delay the W7J release in any way. I would buy this laptop today if it was available.
