according to the newest G1 review by laptopmag, the G1 has a 2X DL drive?! is this true? shouldn't it be 8x?
to the owners: how long does it take to burn a 4gb dvd?
god please tell me laptopmag made a mistake...

You've got single layer and dual layer speeds mixed up. Besides, 4GB wouldn't be DL any how.

That and every other notebook dvd burner, 2x is the fastest you'll burn a dual layer dvd on any notebook. There are standards for all optical drives... 8x is the fastest it will burn any blank DVD media...... DL or actually Super Multi is the most advanced feature. So, with an 8x Super Multi DVD Burner, you can burn DVD-R/+R at 8x... and you can do formats up to actually Dual Layer AND Double Layer.... The older just 8x DL drives just did Dual Layer and not double..
I know this hasn't been updated in probably a year or so, but the image below basically shows how speeds vary between drives:

sorry i wasn't clear. i wanted to know how fast the 2x DL can burn a 4gb SL DVD cuz i still have a few stacks of SL dvd's that i haven't used yet and i won't be buying DL's until i've finished using them
sorry justin am not grasping what u're saying... so the 8x DL on my m1210 isn't quite an 8x and it's actually a 2x? and that this 2x DL on the g1 can actually burn SL dvd's at 8x? :S -
Each drive has separate speeds for single layer DVD+R, single layer DVD-R, single layer DVD+RW, DVD-RW, and dual layer DVD+R. You'll have to look at the specifications for each drive to see what the different speeds are.

Correct... actually you're not grasping what I'm saying because you're reading "2x DL on G1" in whatever report it was you read. The G1, just like every other Asus model this year, has some form of 8x Super Multi (either the traditional 12.7mm or slim 9.5mm), either way, their writing of different media is all basically the same... What's important for you is this:
Something they basically all have in common:
Read and write CD's at 24x
Read DVD's at 8x
Write DVD-R's at 8x
Write DVD-DL at 2x (2.2x or something close to that)
If you have a "DL" DVD burner, it'll either burn dual layer or double layer - depending on the manufacturer.... "Super Multi" means it'll do both of the "DL" formats as well as read DVD-RAM discs....
For what you're actually looking for........ your current drive should burn single layer dvd's at 8x - which is 8x faster than the dvd would play..... so if it's a 2 hour movie, it'll burn in 15 minutes.... get it? The G1 will do the same. -
awesome, clear as crystal. thanks for ur quick reply
