so i bought an asus g1s. i can play world of warcraft at 80 frames per second. a 3 year old game... unfortunately i thought world of warcraft was going to be the only game i played. then i discovered the next true MMO- age of conan. well it releases in a few months, should be fine on my new $2000 purchase. requirements are that of oblivion you say? well let me install that and test it out, im sure i will be pleased. up loads oblivion.. seems pretty good, let me get out of the starter dungeon and see how it really performs. choppy. at 12x10 medium settings? i better download a patch or two. downloaded latest patch.. no performance changes. wait... a year old game runs like this on my new $2000 laptop? gotta be bad programming... let me read some message boards...

CONSENSUS: PEOPLE, NOW IS ONE OF THE WORST TIMES TO BUY. WAIT FOR THE FIRST WAVE OF DX10 GAMES TO RELEASE AND BUY EARLY 08. AT THE VERY LEAST WAIT FOR THE 8800M. I REPEAT DO NOT PURCHASE AN 8600M LAPTOP WITH LONGEVITY IN MIND. OVER AND OUT.

Oblivion runs at 20fps or so on most computers... and you do have to tweak it alot. The 8600gt performs about the same as a 7900gs. Also they showcased recently crysis playing on a toshiba with an 8700m which is just an overclocked 8600 *Shrugs*
Bigger cards are going to take up more battery and be hotter too... I am very pleased with the performance of my G1S and am not worried that I wont be able to play a game thats coming out in the near future on it.
Also, better tech is always almost always around the corner... when the 8800m comes out.. then the 9xxx series will probably be shortly after that... or some new cpu... or a kitchen sink.

I dunno about you but Oblivion runs just fine at medium high settings on my computer.

Make sure you read the tweakguide for it at tweakguides.com

Yeah I'd say it runs at 20-30 fps even at 10x7, med. settings, no AA. =[

I'm running it maxed out with HDR and 4xAA 12x10 on a desktop 8600GT

Could the mobile version be that bad?

I'm running oblivion at 1200x800, mid settings, HDR, no AA, and I get 40+ outdoors, and 60+ indoors, never drops below 30. I'm confident I can push the graphics much more but I prefer smooth gameplay. Make sure you have the latest drivers from laptopvideo2go.com.

Laptops are constantly evolving and there is no best time to buy. When something new comes out, the next best thing will be right around the corner. Thus buy a laptop when you need one, not when you think you'll be satisfied with the specs/performance. You never will be.

If you want to do real gaming, get a desktop. You're only asking to be disappointed.

Laptop gaming has been becoming popular more recently, but fact of the matter is, laptops are completely on the other side as far as design metrics go.

The fact that the chassis is smaller makes it difficult to stay in the game long, since it gets warmer a LOT faster, as well as less ventilation in the form of a single CPU/GPU fan, so you can count on it to crash and burn faster compared to a desktop.

Then add on to the fact that your choices for video cards are limited, particularly to the midrange line. Note that there is a significant speed difference between midrange and high end on desktops now. If you buy an 8600GTS and compare it with an 8800GTX, the performance difference is about double, which is unusual when you consider that midranges have always been able to be overclocked within range of the lower rung high-end units.

Then add on to the fact that the CPU gets hotter faster, so the throttle routine for the CPU/GPU likely kicks in a lot earlier than a desktop's throttle routine since it keeps cooler (my E6320 hovers at 35-40C idle, my T7200 is always above 50C).

Oblivion is a terribly coded game...it's not your laptop's fault.

as many people have stated, laptops aren't meant for gaming, even the gaming laptops, simply because their design doesn't allow for it. while it may be nice to play portably, you're not going to get the same experience as if you had a desktop. personally, i keep my work / music / videos for laptop use and games / videos for desktop use, simply because desktops are 100x more powerful than laptops. (i'm kidding but they are more powerful)
