    Hi All,

I'm trying to decide whether jumping for the DVD burner in the Z70V is a good idea, or whether I should spend that extra money on an external casing and a known well-performing IDE DVD-burner (like the BenQ 1620). So, what manufacturer/model# is used, and can anybody report on media compatibility and burn quality?

    Thanks,
    Sandeep

    Toshiba/Samsung TS-L532A

The difference between that and a combo drive is very little. Depends on what you really want to do. 8x dual layer is darn good to have in a laptop...... it just so happens to be our standard in all of our systems this year.... I mainly use Fuji discs of late.... all work nicely.

if u have a desktop i think u'd be better off burning dvds on it instead. laptop burners can get really noisy and can slow the laptop down quite a bit.

If the option is buy the laptop without a drive at all and put that money towards a desktop burner, then that makes a lot of sense. If you're looking to go with a combo drive at least....... you're looking at another $60 some to have a lot more compatibility and great uses down the road..... regardless of if you're planning on using it for occasional use or hardcore copying and production type stuff...... that's another story. You'll want to use a desktop drive for that type of stuff when you can. But for dvd authoring on the go.... you're not going to be able to match that on a desktop drive and an external won't be something you'd take with you.

    Just food for thought.

I've searched Google about this drive but I haven't really been able to find much info about this drive, in terms of reviews etc.. Is it possible to get a different drive installed? Or, is it easy to replace the standard combo drive with say an NEC ND-6500A?

    Thanks!

    Look harder......

You can install another drive, but every company has different faceplate attachments, so you're not going to be able to use the matching faceplate for these computers.

    hey bumblebee...

I was able to find some information at cdfreaks.com on their messageboards. That NEC ND-6500 drive looks very nice... I know they have great burning performance and burn with low error rates. I archive alot of my data, and I'm very sensitive to burn quality issues, thus the worry about the integrated drive. I won't have access to a desktop, so I want to make sure I have the best portable DVD+/-RW drive possible.

    hi bumblebee,

I agree with your plan 100%. Do you know if the NEC 6500 drive is compatible with the Z70V? Everything I've found on that Toshiba/Samsung drive indicates that its an absolute piece of crap [ :D] It goes by two model numbers:

    Toshiba SD-R6372 and Samsung TS-L532A

Maybe I'll just skip all this nonsense, get the CDRW/DVD combo drive and buy a well-known external IDE burner and a casing.

You can make any drive fit..... you're just going to be glueing the faceplate on the unit....... or in the case of a slot load... maybe even cutting a slot in the faceplate.

We've done both in the past.. just for testing and per customer request.... it's not easy, even with all the right tools and spare parts to test on... It's certainly a test of your skill.

    Thanks,
