it's a u-dimm (ddr2 400). There is one open dimm. The Z33a has 256mb onboard and can take a 512mb u-dimm in the open slot. The Z33ae has 512mb onboard and can also take a 512mb u-dimm --- and a 1gb u-dimm when they reputable places start making them.

ah ic so the one im buying is the z33ae.. is the 512 worth the upgrade?

Well with 512mb onboard, I don't know what to tell you. It depends on what you're doing with it. If you were looking at the older Z33a's... I'd say 256mb is what XP Pro requires just to run... and it would be obvious.
It depends on how you multitask.... Keep in mind that the unit has integrated graphics and you can use the full 128mb of system ram that intel will allows if you use 1gb of system ram...... 64mb if you leave it at the stock 512mb. Personally I can't use anything with less than 1gb, but it depends on what you need. I'd say it's a good thing to pick up because they're also very hard to find on the retail market because only a few notebooks that Asus makes (some of their own and some sony models) used them. -
yes, sorry i just noticed ur a rep from PROportable which is good cuz i hav a couple questions
im thinking of building up a barebone of z33ae cuz i find it to b a lil bit cheaper,
now im a student so is the student discount at ur site still in effect? and do i havta order over the phone to get the discount (it really doesn't matter to me, online or not)
and i'll b using the computer for really light gaming.. graphics on par with diablo 2 so integrated graphics wont b a problem.. but mostly for word processing..
oh that reminds me, the optional 9 cell battery, i kno it bumps up the weight by a pound or so which doesn't matter cuz its already extremely light, but where do i buy the optional 9 cell battery? and does it physically stick out to make the form factor ugly? and is the z33ae comfy to type on for say like an hour straight?
sorry for so many questions lol thanks in advance -

Anything associated with member discounts on this site run through me anyway for approval... but just enter the info as mentioned on the NBR member discount thread and they'll take care of it on the backend after the order is recieved. For the student discount just make sure to fax in your current student id and place an order like normal but put the discount option in the special instructions of the order form. I believe this is only good on a complete system... and it's either $50 discount or one of our aluminum notebook cases. If you're going to go for the notebook case, you need to use the link on the discount thread to add the case to your cart.
We've got the batteries... you can find them on the z33ae product page under the configuration options... all other accessories for it would be on there as well. -
If you are using a z33a, hurry up, the micro sodimm 256MB and 512MB DDR2 price is drop. It is a big drop, good for all the users who own a z33a.

so-dimms have dropped... not u-dimms... there is a HUGE difference and u-dimms certainly aren't dropping.

"and is the z33ae comfy to type on for say like an hour straight?"
We have the Portableone UX, which is a modified Z33a and it is surprisingly comfortable to type on for long periods. Personally, I generally cannot type with any sort of accuracy on most 12" keyboards and I would not even have ordered this unit if not for the fact that my daughter really needed a light-weight machine. I was amazed at how easy it is to type on this keyboard. It is nicely laid out and the keys have a really good feel to them. She uses it in law school, so regulary types on it for extended periods in class and while outlining, etc. and absolutely loves it. In fact, she finds it even more comfortable to type on than the 14" Fujitsu she had before. The keys are full sized (except for the spacebar and the smaller right shift key) and just have a solid feel and a responsive touch. HTH -
thanks for the tip everybody =)

I would try mwave for the z33ae. It's pretty cheap, around 1100 for a 1.73Ghz, 40GB 5400rpm, standard everything else. Personally, I'm going to wait for the next incarnation of the X series from IBM; I can't imagine using a keyboard that's not full sized as my main computer...plus I'm a fan of the pointing stick. You might also want to consider the W5A battery; it's equivalent to the 6cell z33a battery, or at least it's compatible. You could prolly expect 3.5-4 hours on it in real world usage.
