I am content with the W7J, besides anti virus I feel that I need something to prevent spy crap squatting on my hard drive. Any suggestions? Doe they hog the processor and memory?

    thanks,

antivirus would be aol's virus shield by Kapersky (#1 on the market :)) Its very lightweight and unlike the real kapersky its free and has most of the same features.

    http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp?

firewall - comodo (one of the best, lightweight too, and is also free.

    http://www.comodo.com/

in many firewall tests, it let the least amount of traffic through.
likewise kapersky caught one of the most.

SpyBot - Search & Destroy and Windows Defender are good anti-spyware programs. And both are free.

I second Spybot...you might also want to look at the free version of ad-aware.

kaspersky, strongly recommended. google it for 3 month free serial. after 3 month, another promotion will come out(i believe), so don't worry for the serial key.

I use Adaware SE by Lavasoft, and AVG Free by Grisoft. The first one is anti-spyware/anti-adware, the second is anti-virus.

They're both free, and their virus definitions are updated several times weekly. I've been using them for almost a year, and they haven't failed me. My system is even cleaner than a MacBook.

A great program that works is Spywareblaster from JavaCool Softwarefor websurfing. It's free to use (you can buy it and get automatic updates instead of manually updating it). It prevents malware sites from dumping crap on your computer. Doesn't use much in terms of memory/process. Basically a black list of websites.

It doesn't work for email, file sharing programs, and the like. For all around protection, I use AVG Internet Security Suite on my laptop. I like how it automatically configures safety for different network types (wired, wireless, roaming).

I use Kaspersky Internet Suite on my desktop and it also does an excellent job.

Kaspersky anti-virus updates hourly. Their "active virus shield" version (see link above in previous post) is a good option for a free solution.

I've got Kaspersky Internet Security (antivirus, firewall, etc.), which is a great combined security suite. It costs a bit, but it's worth it, in my opinion.

I've used Avast (Antivirus) and Ad-Aware SE for a while now. Both are free, as has been said, and both work very well and are frequently updated.

For antivirus I would recommend AVG and for spyware Spybot S & D. Spybot picked up a few problems were Ad-ware didn't. Those are the only two I use and my computer is free of spyware and viruses.

Kaspersky.... If you actually want a great AV, this is bottomline the best. We've been using it for a few years now and there's just nothing like it.... At this point any IT guy that doesn't suggest it, probably shouldn't have that job...

I use spybot, adaware and defender.

Spybot is the only one that ever catches anything.
