i checked hte asus site and they have the F3SV series listed, but they appear all to have the same specs, they dont distinguish the difference between the different models in this series (A1, B1, X1, more?)

so, what is the difference between these three?

    B1 - C2D t7500 cpu and 1680x1050 resolution(WSXGA+)

    X1 - C2D t7300 cpu and 1360x768 resolution (WXGA)

    Mainly in the screens

The cpu on the B1 is better compared to the other ones. The screen resolutions are also different, however that doesn't say anything about quality. The higher the resolution the more space you have to work with, so that's mostly personal preference.

isnt getting the best resolution possable a good thing though? because you can set your resolution in the settings area (unless you cant on laptops?)

You can on laptops, but on LCDs in general (including laptop LCDs) lower-than-native resolutions look fuzzy whenever the pixel size is not a multiple of the native pixel size.

E.g., for 1680x1050 this means that the first lower-than-native resolution that looks good would be 840x525 -- clearly not a useful resolution nowadays (also nonstandard so unsure if it can be set).

Scaling pixels is quite obvious when working with the OS, but not noticeable in games. So this is not an issue for games, but it is for work (word processing, programming, etc.)

Also, it might be that a higher resolution screen from the same generation with a lower-resolution one will have poorer quality (viewing angles brightness etc.) -- but of this I am by no means sure.

Edit: fuzzy, I meant fuzzy, not grainy.

There was a poll run in the Compal forum regarding which resolution people prefer, and the 1650x1050 and 1440x900 pretty much split the votes with 1360x768 getting very few. The higher resolution the smaller all your text/icons etc are, so for many people it comes to eyesight and what they are comfortable with. Try and compare what you are looking at now to see what you might be ok with. Unfortunately 98% of what the mainstream stores sell are WXGA at 15.4" so you cant go for a drive and take a look at the others. :(

right now on my computer i use 1280x1024 and i think its great, so im going to guess that the 1360x768 will be closest to what im used to, so that should be good for me

Actually the 1440x900 is a great res even on a 14", I agree with sco_fri. I haven't seen any 1360x768 res before, I would assume wallpapers will be difficult to come by at first.

yeah wallpapers would probably be hard to find for it :p

a higher resolution would probably be nicer, but there is a sale on the X1 right now and not the A1, so its like an extra $100 so its not really worth it for me (hopefully i wont regret that one :))
