The AMD 6xxx series is not present at all. Was hoping for AMD 6570 to be present in some laptops (K series especially has disappointed me) since prev ASUS laptops (K series) had the ATI 5730.
Is it because ATI's switchable graphics are not as good as Optimus?
I think to make best use of SandyBridge chipsets manufacturers may have opted for Optimus. Just a wild guess. I'm not very knowledgeable about switchable graphics technology.

I'm not sure what your asking. There are several asus models that have ati chips in them, there are several other brands that do as well.

Name one that has a SB chip and an AMD card.

I do think its different, If the info that I have is true, it uses a mux connector, and people with the acer 3820tg/4820tg/5820tg and the envy 14, do have switchable graphics in linux (all those models come equipped with the 5650)

I was thinking of the 6600 and 6700 series.

Optimus is just out there for far more time than the AMD version (although the switch thing was on AMD plans and divulged for also quite some time)

Yes that is the older generation though which works with vga_switcheroo. This is a new automatically switching implementation -- no details yet unless you have some info on this that I don't? ;)

6600, 6700 series? Isn't that too much of a demand? I think those chips are quite high end graphics cards. The 6750 sits on the MacBook Pro if I'm not mistaken. Well maybe they can be justified in something like N53SN (the best among N series)!
I'm also hoping for Asus to release a good laptop with a high end AMD card (if its 6600, 6700 series, good enough :D)

I dont have any details of this as you, I talked about the older implementation since I think its going to be based on that ;)

I think they have the same TDP as the older 5600/5700 (now 6500) series, since they are being fitted in laptops ranging from 13'' to 17''

I think that's because ASUS historically favored Nvidia over ATI. If you look back on the ASUS laptops that were released over the years, they do use Nvidia in majority of their products. Of course, it is not necessarily that ASUS is biased, since ATI's mobile GPUs weren't up to par with their Nvidia's counterparts couple of years ago, and have became competitive with Nvidia's offering only recently.

Furthermore, Anand did a test on the mobile GPU shoot out, and it seemed that while ATI GPUs are getting better and better performance wise, their battery life and heat dissipation are still not as good as Nvidia's. In addition, I think Nvidia Optimus at the moment is the better solution to AMD's switchable graphics, something the owner of 3820tg/4820tg also echo.

    This is Anand's conclusion:
Of course, I'd still love to see AMD GPU offerings from ASUS, since I do prefer them over Nvidia. However, at the current moment, AMD does need to put in a little more work before manufactures like ASUS and Acer would offer them design wins.

Where does it say you need a asus laptop with an ati card and south bridge?
why does it need to be asus?

could you link that article? Is it really anand? I think its jared...

I do find optimus still a poor driver mess, the switch is often not accurate, I do like the manual switch.

And its sad, I liked the ''older'' U series, specially the U36, I also liked the K series. Too bad that now all they offer is nvidia.

It was Jarred, I stand corrected. Still, personally I don't think his conclusion was invalid.

Personally I prefer the manual switch too, since it gives you greater power in controlling your computer's battery life and performance. However, the manual switch is also quite annoying to operate, since you'd have to quit most, if not all applications to make the switch.
