i recently posted a thread in "what notebook to buy" and after some suggestions i decided to go for the asus s96j

now that my mind is made up i have no idea where to buy it
i currently live in malaysia but i will be going back to europe soon

im really into these online configuration things
so i can make my laptop and know what it will cost
but i havent been able to find anything like that here in malaysia
in fact i havent been able to find any proper online notebook shop here
there is btonotebook.com.my, with a whole lot of talk and big list of resellers
but no online configurator or anything, nor do any of the resellers have that
most dont even have e-mail let alone an online shop, i wonder why

the online configurators some of the resellers here use a very nice
but they only seem to cater american and canadian customers
maybe one can make an exception for me but then what about warranty?
i hope someone in here might know where to buy my asus and configure it
or maybe a reseller here is willing to help me with this
    thanks a bunch!

hi stimey. where are you in malaysia? if u are in Kuala Lumpur, then i suggest you go shop at LowYat Plaza in Bukit Bintang. The are a lot of computer and notebook shops there. Most of the shop doesnt have an online shop because people dont really buy many stuff online yet. As for online configuring things i think you can only get that option if you buy it straigth from Sony, HP, Dell and Others. Hope that helps. Btw I live in malaysia :)

    im on penang (island)
i have been to several shops here but the prices seem to vary a lot
and i really like those oncifurators to check prices
and see how much my system will cost :)
i guess i should make configuring myself and print it a few times
then goto shops and ask for a quote on them, as there are no online shops
got any good suggestions for penang ?

im thinking to get like this:
asus s96j with core duo 1.66gz (maybe more/cure 2 duo?)
    2x 512mb ddr2 667mhz, 80gb 7200rpm hd, dvdrw, wifi
configured in this shop that would cost me around 4650RM
1054$/3850RM for basic config it selects by default
you think i can find that config here for that price ?
its a pitty none of these us/ca sites seem to ship to malaysia or even europe
my guess is that is prolly something todo with warranty

MilestonePC sells internationally. The main consideration should be tax/customs in your country I guess. BTW, I'm a notebook geek now???

Hi, rkcomputer.net sells that model of asus internationally. I had some communication with Rob from there. Very nice guy I recommend that store.

    i made a s96j with 80gb 7200, core 2 duo 1.83gz and 2x 512mb at both milestone and rkcomputers
the prices differ a lot, 1175$ at milestone and $1509 at rkcomputer
rkcomputer comes with bluetooth tho but apart from that they are the same
lets see what i can find here localy and otherwise i go for milestone
that is if i cant find it cheaper somewhere else ofcourse
afterall i am dutch, i want the cheapest yet best deal possible :p
any other suggestions for resellers/online stores?
    thanks again for the response!

    edit:
anyone know anything about importing/tax stuff into malaysia?
i read in the fedex tax stuff for sending goods to malaysia that
no matter what you send it has to be taxed and paid for even gifts :(
    Code:
    Gifts
Gifts are subject to duty and tax regardless of the value.

they dont even give the rate or anywhere, 10%, 5%, 50%, who knows
i will call customs on monday and get some proper info :)

after spending a day in georgetown going from store to store
im slighty dissepointed about the shops here
i been to a couple of shops listed on btonotebook.com.my
they told me there is no way you can customize/configure it
you have to choose from whatever packages they offer
or only get 1 year limited local warranty on it if you want just the barebone
they call it OEM asus, what happend to VBI ?
they also say there are *no* 7200rpm drives availible in malaysia
i find this pretty silly, the btonotebook.com.my yaps about cutomizing
and configuration and bla bla, and their resellers dont allow any of it
apart form that the offered packages are way too expensive
even if i had to pay 10% import tax its still cheaper to order form the states
i got a quote from "mind maker" a reseller of the s96j
they offered me barebone configured with 256mb ram (ddr2 533mhz)
80gb (5400rpm), dvdrw, wifi, and core duo 1.6gz for 3850RM/$1035
there's no way to get 7200rpm hd, 667mhz ddr2 in it nor a core 2 duo cpu option
    for $300 more i can have the barebone + 1gb (2x 512mb ddr2 667mhz)
80gb 7200rpm hd, dvdrw, wifi, and core 2 duo 1.8gz here.
    Code:
    Intel VBI Asus S96J Core Duo 15.4 Inch WXGA/ATI X1600 256MB/Built-in Webcam/Combo $665.00
    CPU: Core 2 Duo T5600 1.83 GHz 64Bit 2M 667 Retail $269.00
    RAM: Corsair 1GB DDR-2 667 SODIMM (1X1024) $125.00
    HD: Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 80GB 7200rpm S-ATA $135.00
    Internal Wireless Card: IntelĀ® PRO/Wireless 3945 Tri-mode 802.11a/b/g $38.00
    Optical Drive: 8 x DVDRW Dual Layer Slot-Load $69.00
    Total: $1,301.00

monday i will check with customs on how the import tax is
im very dissapointed at the state malaysian shops are in :(
