All Asus notebooks are online and they are shipped out to people. Mainly why is coz they are ODMs, and some kind of weird deal between some other manufacturer (Dell, I believe - I can be wrong too). So all you can do is tell them where to order it from and let that site ship the notebook to their place.

Some resellers do have them for display (or at least I know MilestonePC in Canada does... not sure about their US store, but it is in Freemont, California) ... and I've seen a couple in retails: The Source by Circuit city and Office Depot in Canada (again, not sure about USA, but I think they should have a few models)....

I am in Costa Mesa 92660 CA and haven't seen any Asus notebooks for sale at all, you would want to buy from someone out of CA so then you don't have to pay CA tax.

I purchased from Proportable, he just posted it to my work address, worked really well, I even paid him while I was still in the UK (direct bank transfer into his account).

I was lucky because I was able to look at one in the UK before I came out.

The closest place that stock Asus is Alicecomputers. There is one located in Covina, about 25 minutes from Yorba Linda. I don't know about their prices though.

G2P also has a walk in store, but he's in Brooklyn.

The MPC store in Fremont is only a warehouse IIRC.

    um

to help you a little, yes you can buy it from a walk in store.

I dont know of any in southern california. Up in northern california you can get it in fremont from milestonepc.com and portable one.

That doesnt mean there isnt one down there, just that I never looked it up. I looked for the closest one to me.

keep in mind that if you order it from one of the resellers in las vegas area and get it shipped
( get it shipped overnight, and will call pick up) you will save 7.75% sales tax. I mean, you go to a pay phone ok, you order it, then you drive to a ups warehouse and pick it up within 24 hours.
if you have decided on that one Im trying to explain to you that there is no reason to go to a store, it would cost you over $100 in tax.

Unfortunately ALOT of these stores are NOT actual retail stores where one can physically go in and browse a display, they are warehouses. Mwave is like that, MilestonePC USA is like that, and I believe GenTechPC is also like that. The only store in SoCal I saw that had display models was PCBuzz, but it was only a select number of Built on models, no ensembles.

ok, i'm not very familiar with the californian/US geography... cos i'm in australia,

when does the tax apply and what is it for? is it if i get something posted from interstate?
    is fremont in CA?

doesnt matter much if its an actual retail store or not, i just thought it would be easier for my relatives to get it if it was a shop

I may be wrong becaue I have only been here for 3 months, but from what I understand California has got many taxes on different things and it varies state to state (not like NZ or AUS you normally have GST and thats applied nationally) so of you brought a laptop within CA you would pay a CA state sales tax, if you buy one out of state and get it shipped to CA you do not pay the CA sales tax, so therefore you save.

I purchased mine from Proportable and did not pay the CA sales tax, I think he is in Pennsylvania?

I remember when the W3J first came out, Fremont is in CA and is the main distribution center fro the US, it was painfull that the laptop comes into Fremont then get shipped to the resellers all around the US then back to those of us in CA (adds a couple of extra days postage), but if it had shipped from Fremont CA, those of us in CA would have to pay more tax.

If I am wrong I am sure some locals will correct me :D

I doubt any of the stores here in CA would have the W3J on display.

But like NZ says... I ordered mine from C9tech which is based somewhere on the east coast. He had to get it cross shipped from Fremont to there and then back to me here in Torrance. It kinda sucked waiting for 2 weeks after my credit card went through and them having it in stock.

fremont is a suburb of san jose, in the bay area. about 400 miles north of where youll be in california.

    las vegas is actually closer.

Portable one does have a store front where you can look at their models. I may have been wrong about milestonepc.com

California tax in most areas is 8.25%. I believe it's 7.75% if you live in Orange County.

If you buy a notebook from a reseller established out of California, no sales tax is added. Proportable is located in PA so sales tax is no applicable. I believe MilestonePC's US division is located in Fremont so there will be sales tax on purchases if you reside in California.

We're actually located in Kansas City, Missouri.

Hopefully within a couple weeks we'll be able to ship direct from CA to CA customers without any sales tax or extra time involved... Same goes for other customers in warehouse states.
More updates to follow on our site.

For now, only MO customers have to pay sales tax.

oops.. i have a bad habit of assuming anything east of California is the east coast ;)

impoze, yes MO = missouri. 8.25% off $1799 is about $148. That's the cost if you want your laptop "sooner" :) ... if ur patient then just order online. Just imagine your smile when you go through those few weeks of hell and finally receive your W3J. Well worth it!

There isn't CA sales tax right now... but we have a warehouse in CA that we use. Unfortunately we can't ship directly to CA customers from that warehouse, unless the customer likes paying the 8.5+% in sales tax. That will all change soon.... Imagine the shipping time for CA orders if we could ship direct... and all you wouldn't even have to pay any shipping [free FedEx Ground].
