im most probably buying the z96j.. so im just wondering which tv tuner you guys think will be good for it (or should i buy the one powernotebooks offer)
im probably getting the WSXGA+ screen so does anyone know if there's a tv tuner that actually supports up to this resolution? And just by your experiences, which tv tuner do you think works pretty well and is easy to install?

and does anyone know how a cardbus tv tuner compare to an external one?

    thx!

I have wondered the same thing. I purchased an ATI TV Wonder USB 2.0 for my Z70va, and have had all kinds of problems with it! I have basically given up on it - it will not recognize ANY channels. I got it because I have XP, not Media Center Edition, and thought its good video cards, plus the fact it promised capture of closed caption text, made it worth getting. I'm sorry I did - it only worked for a week before causing a system crash and then basically going kaput.

Did you ever try to see if closed captions can be turned on in the avertv?

I have a DVICO Fuision HDTV USB 2, and it's the ****. It get clear QAM HDTV, it gets of my HDTV cable channals for free and some of my digital cable channels. But i'm not an hdtv expert, so dont quote me on that. But the only problem is that MCE wont recognize it as a analog tuner but other software works well. But watching HDTV on my 15.4 WSXGA+ looks great....

Can someone explain exactly how a TV tuner works on a notebook/computer? What's required for it to work properly? Is it accessing channels via the internet, or does it depend on your home TV setup? I've always been curious about just what one does and any limitations they might have...any info would be most appreciated :)

Calibrated, tv tuners don't need accesing channels via internet, they are not "streaming" tv programs. Tuner just turns your laptop into tv set so you have to connect it to external antenna.

There are someTV tuners that will allow you to stream your video over the internet and they come with software that does it. If that is something you are interested in you can download ORB its free. It allows you to stream cable tv, music, videos over anynetwork or internet. But mastha212 is right you just use your laptop as a tv and think of tuner are your cablebox thats it.
