i've heard that if you upgrade the hdd, it will void the asus global warranty. Is this true? what about for upgrading ram?
-
The thing about voiding warranty is that manufacturers don't want customers touching the insides, as potentially, they can break the notebook, which does void the warranty, since it was the customer who broke it.
However, with HD and RAM, the upgrade process is a piece of cake, which is why they are very lenient on it, unless somehow upgrading the HD/RAM results in breaking the notebook, which is very rare. Pretty much it doesn't void the warranty. -
You can technically upgrade it, providing you don't break any seals in the process.
The only thing that has a seal like that on my V1Jp is the CPU heatsink assembly (meaning they don't want anyone to change the CPU or the GPU). I have not checked if the WiFi card is in the same boat, since I *think* it's under the keyboard in the V1Jp... -
(New Jersey, right?)
Legally the seals don't mean a thing. From a legal stand point they can not void your warranty for the seals being broken. Think Ford could get away with a sticker on the hood of their cars and say you have to come to them for anything inside or your warranties void? Nope, we are protected by the law
You have a legal right to have your notebook serviced by someone other than the manufacturer(including yourself). This includes upgrades and modifications. However, if the service/mod is the cause of the failure then they do not have to honor the warranty.
For Example.. Changing out the ram will mean they no longer to warranty the ram but if your processor goes out (unless caused by the ram) they are still bound to honor the warranty on the proc. Also if you break the lcd putting the ram in then they are obviously not bound to make the repair to the lcd in that case.
This is covered by US law however from a practical stand point fighting a large corporation is always an uphill battle.
will changing the hdd or upgrading the ram void the asus warranty?
