I read that the K51AB and K50AB will come with the amazing 4860 ati mobility. But it also comes with the AMD cpu will that be a great problem for games like crysis or GTAIV?

no, that is only on some models that will have the AMD these are the newer griffin processors.

We'll have to wait and see how well these will perform.

Doubt it, AMD is not really that behind, the problem lies that it does not have processors that can match the higher end of the Intel family.

They are still a viable option and perform well. Actually, they say AMD GPU+CPU pair rather well too. :D

I liked the idea of the new K series, I will definetly check it out! If it turns out good I might get one :p

Doubtful that the AMD CPU will bottleneck the performance. Even the slowest of the current AMD processors should be sufficient. Most people wouldn't notice a difference comparing similar processors from either company.

As it has been for the past several years, the biggest bottleneck for gaming performance especially the cutting edge/newest ones, continues to be the gpu, not cpu. That's why you can have good framerates with lower cpus, which is how Gateway and others are making their budget gaming systems these days (and how I get 3DM06 @ 7K with an ATI4670 & an old P-D820 cpu on my desktop) - same concept applies for notebooks too.

Well, I think Puma had the problem of the CPU auto downclocks when in battery mode, so let's hope that problem is solved in the new one.

Don't most mobile CPUs downclock in battery mode? My T7700 seems to...

How is that a problem. Pretty much all mobile chips from AMD and Intel do that to save power.

I was under the impression that Intel chips don't do that, because my P8600 certainly does not seem to downclock.

Also, a lot of people who own the tx2500z seemed to complain about Puma downclocking, so it was only natural to assume that it was out of the norm.

Your P8600 should downclock (unless speedstep is disabled). Use CPU-Z or RMClock to check, it varies the voltage and throttles the speed.

Yes your GPU also downclocks as well. I remember one time i was going to play crysis and i pluggged on my tv downstairs there was major lag then when i looked in the back i realized the notebook want plugged it it chugged like mad too.

Use Powermizer to prevent the GPU from downclocking while on AC power.

The question does not have a direct yes or no answer, it is going to depend on what task or game your performing.

Even a high end C2D can bottleneck if you throw a game at it like supreme commander. But try something much more gpu heavy like Crysis and its not an issue.

In a direct comparison chances are an intel cpu will do better clock for clock, but the amd will have something to trade out to even out the playing field, be it lower power draw, cheaper cost, or maybe in this case the better gpu.

The phobia of amd cpu's that is plaguing the states right now is the reason I think we will not see this model....

I think the K series is like an updated M series, its not actually targeted for gaming, its just a side option and thats another reason I think the cpu choice was made the way it was. Plus its nice to have a variety and competition.

CPU downclocking is controlled first through the BIOS (speed step-like and than through the OS/applications (power management).

As far as I know about AMD vs Intel, the core 2 duos appear to be more efficient and faster clock for clock than AMD cpus (don't know about the new gen, tho). This means they also heat up less, are more environmentally friendly, and allow for longer battery life.

Well you can't really draw those conclusions just from clock efficiency.
I'm not sure whether there's a difference between the size of the chips.
If AMD is using a die dize that's lower than Intel, then even though it's less clock efficient, it may still produce less heat and have longer battery life.

If the K series with the ATI 4860 does come here I don't think they would pair it with a weak CPU.
We will just have to wait and see what the final product is.

if asus sort out cooling and battery life, then they will have a winner.
