It happens at random times while I'm browsing my files.

It happens even during a clean boot.

I've tried reformatting; didn't work... uh what happens after that? I'm really tempted to throw the machine off my 42nd storey balcony, as I'm done with the stupid RMA people.

When you get tired of life, I recommend that you sell your living and get a Kitten.
:D :D On the topic please ensure you running latest update from microsoft and avoid frisky installs and have yourself scaned for any form of malware infestation and Use a Browser with better security record than ie before that check your disk for error, if persists watch your running process for culprit

jasperchan When you say this do you mean a reformat and clean install did not fix the issue or the reformat failed? Also if you can rule out a malware/virus issue look at your event viewer for any errors.
You could also try the classic response from ASUS - restore to factory settings (F9 at bootup or use the DVD's that the AI recovery program generates)

It's WINDOWS explorer, not internet explorer.

So far, from experience, I have zero faith in microsoft "updates" and any relationship whatsoever to proper working performance.

    uh, that... is the problem

For the the vast majority of users, windows update has been problem free. You issue is probably specific to your computer and related to something in your configuration. Software from certain questionable sources could be the cause if you have some of that installed on your computer. Since discussion about that is prohibited, i'll leave it at that on that particular subject.

What anti-virus are you running and did you run a check for viruses and malware?

Finally, i know that is not what you want to hear, but i'll recommend this as a last resort. Do a full reformat, update windows, install only the programs you immediately need and use the computer for a couple of days. Leave any software from shady sources (if any) out of the equation. If the computer works normally, then install your other programs one by one and test to see what happens.

If you are looking for a good, but not too resource heavy AV, i recommend Microsoft Security Essentials.

Like my BSOD problem on my other Asus laptop, this "windows explorer is shutting down" problem was there practically from day 1... I didn't configure anything. At the time I assumed - incorrectly - that the constant windows updates will eliminate it.

I'm using AVG 2012. I'm pretty much adverse to installing anything with "Essentials" in the name. I'll probably reformat from a windows 7 iso, so to not have to deal with all the Asus bloatware once and for all. Between my 2 laptops, I've reinstalled autocad/sketchup/revit/acrobat/adobe masters collection/avg/microsoft office/audacity/bittorrent/various drivers, codecs, etc not twice, but FOUR TIMES.

Try a memory test: Diagnosing memory problems on your computer

If that isn't it, the most obvious suspects are explorer extensions like some of the ASUS backup/encryption/web-storage software, antivirus (AVG in your case), and anything else you may have installed that adds actions to the explorer menus.

Beyond that, the standard disk check and sfc /scannow tools are painless and worth a try.

If you are still getting explorer crashes after that, you may be unlucky and have a somehow corrupted windows installation out of the box (this does happen), in which case you can clean install from an OEM windows disc: http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...-7-download-links-just-like-vista-before.html

Why would software that COMES WITH THE MACHINE cause it to malfunction? This problem's been there long before I installed AVG or any other program.

i'm still waiting for the sfc /scannow to finish. The disk check is not applicable since the problem occurs on any drive, including external usb ones. And I'm not bothering with programs that I've installed long after the problems began.

Another problem that both my laptops have is that sometimes when opening My Computer or any drive, the folder is empty for up to 20 seconds while the there's a green bar at the top indicating that it's loading. What happened to instantaneous file browsing?

scan is done. As expected... "did not find any integrity violations"

"...Question is: How can you fix a folder that is opening slowly in Windows?
Analyzing the underlying issue is not as easy as it sounds, as there are multiple possibilities why a folder is not displaying its file contents instantly...."

    Ok, not worth fixing lol

I ran the check disk, and it came clean.
