every now and then i get a problem with the asus security protect manager. The fingerprint reader wont read my fingerprint until i scan it about 20 times and sometimes im even unable to login with a password. When i am unable to login with a password i get this error:

"the server is not responding properly. Verify that ASUS security protect manager is properly installed on the target server."

its almost like it takes a while for it to boot up or something sometimes because if i try again after that in a little while it works. This does not happen everytime either, it seems kinda random. It is happening more often now, seems like its almost everyday.

I am having the exact same problem. I have an ASUS F3Series running Vista Ultimate. It is so frustrating because I often have to restart the machine in order to be able to login. Sometimes I easily was 15-20 mins just trying to login to my laptop.

Is there any way I can disable the security protect manager? It is causing me more grief than it is worth.

Just uninstalling it should do the trick?

I had some problems with mine early on. But I decided to erase my fingerprints and try again. After re-scanning my fingerprints for the ASUS app, I can log on with just one swipe. I think I scanned with bad technique/familiarity with the fingerprint reader the first time so that every attempt to log on wouldn't match my first (beginner) bad fingerprint scan.

nah, it isnt caused by a bad first scan. I could type in my name and password and it would still give me the same problem.

im on XP now though and dont have to worry about it anymore though (the guy with the second post might care for a solution though)

its been a while since ive used vista on this laptop, but i think there is an icon in the bottom right corner that if you right click on it, it has to do with asus security. You should be able to use that icon somehow to register your fingerprints.

Or maybe the encryption key used has changed with the reinstallation of the program. In which case your file would most likely be lost.

    Is this file truly important?

I would suggest using TrueCrypt for encrypting volumes (virtual partitions) or even entire HDDs, instead of an ASUS application. TrueCrypt is very reliable, and more importantly, the encryption key is generated from the password so you only need to remember a password, no hassle with backing up encryption keys, which is in itself a liability, etc.

I am not sure how that ASUS security software works. So I cannot say for certain that the encryption key is lost; I only supposed it was so. You should definitely contact ASUS and ask about this.

If the encryption key is indeed lost, I'm afraid that it's better to move on rather than invest any more time in this... The encryption is probably strong and would take a lot of CPU time (many years, on a normal machine) to break... assuming it's even possible to break at all.

But again, first, exhaust any other avenues of recovering the data/encryption key. Call ASUS.

I have a newly bought ASUS F81SE which has a fingerprint reader, and the respective control panel claims it is working properly and has an installed driver but I cannot find access to the ASUS Security Protection Manager in order to set it up. No icon on the desktop that I can find; no utility named accordingly. No entry in the e-manual either. Before I give up on using the reader to log in, any help?

    Thanks, jrk

Hi, well i cant log in at all. like when i try it asks for a password but i never had one. I try to use the fingerprint but that doesnt work.
I deleted Asus security protect manager before this problem occurred.
I tried system restore but it says that
The volume shadow copy service used by system restore is not working. For more infromation view event log (0x81000202)
btw i have an asus u1f running vista business.
