Mostly for anyone who has seen these screens side by side... how do they compare? I want a z71v (for specs), but i've heard some funny sparkly things about the screen, but nothing but good things regarding the z70v. I know this has been mentioned in various places, but i need to make this decision final (i'm ordering today). Both screens are WSXGA+ (1680x1050x15.4") screens. So how are they compared?

    Thanks.

P.S. Justin, maybe u've seen many of these units side by side...whatya think?

I've got it. It's excellent. You can check out some screen shots at the Geared2play.com website. That's where I got mine. Their reviews are pretty good too.

I can vouch for not having a single qualm about my Z70V screen. Never really got the chance to compare to a Z71V... but i honestly thing you'd have to look hard to find things like "sparkles."

Right now on my Z70V I'm staring at a lot of white... if I focus just a bit in front of the screen, the screen actually looks a bit grainy, but that's a property of pretty much ALL matte finish LCD screens I've ever seen.... but again, i have to try to focus on the screen texture itself to notice it. But honestly, if you're trying to look for a flaw, more likely than not, you'll find one... try not to let forum talk influence what your own eyes see too much.

and so help you god, if anyone reads my post and suddenly starts telling the world that the Z70V has a "grainy" screen... so help you god... :: shakes fist ::

to summarize: I likey my lappy.

grainy screen! the Z70v has a grainy screen!!! :p :D I agree that people have blown the LCD issue way out of proportion for most buyers and that if you're looking for something wrong, you'll find something wrong. The Z71v screen does have a slight graniness to it when seen on solid light colors, but unless you're picky or don't give yourself time to adjust to it (which is what happened with the majority of people who were complaining about sparkles), it's not an issue after a week of use (or sooner for some people). The resellers say the Z70v screen is better, but take it from me: the Z71v screen is pretty darn good too, especially for color reproduction, brightness, and viewing angles.

Thanks for the input guys. I agree with what you're saying. I one had a person tell me that LCD's wheren't any good cuz you could see the pixels! THAT'S WHY THEY'RE GOOD -- cuz they're that sharp! Unlike CRT's. So when I hear you talking about "Grainy" you're just seeing the pixels... it's better than having a blurry LCD (which I have seen on a samsung LCD -- a very anoying anomoly!) Anyway, thanks again. I just ordered my Z71v today. I can't wait to get it!!!

I'm ordering it from CompuTrakSystems in richmond. I deal with Raymond all the time and he gives me great deals. He's still getting back to me about the exact cost and a discount (usually around $50) but right now the Z71v will cost $888 (CAN) and each 512mb PC4200 stick will cost around $80-85. I will be transfering my hard drive, wireless mini-pci, and CPU (which will be overclocked to a 533mhz fsb, so it'll become a 2ghz -- but i'll obviously have to increase the maximum voltage of [email protected] to higher) to my new z71v. I'll then sell my m3np barebone and the two sticks of identicle kingston 512mb PC2700. Surprisingly, my m3np still gets 5 hours of battery life (10 monthes later!). I'm impressed. Hopefully I'll get around that with my new z71v once i do the voltage mod (which will likely be above 1volt at 2ghz).

Anyway, that should answer your question :). We were gonna meet at one point at UBC to show each other our laptops. haha. How was your first year anyway?
