so sometimes i'll try and play music and all that will come out of the speakers (either my laptop speakers or my externals) is a distorted sound. You can kinda hear the bass of the song, but nothing beyond that. Then, randomly, it'll come back and be fine. THis leads me to believe its not the speakers, but something internal, got any suggestions?

sounds to me like you modded the decoder there with something. It is infact a soft issue with 99% probability of user error.

    LOL Justitia and Graphfix.

The decoder is a program that reads the file format for you and presents it to you as sound.

He must've done something to it, OR, his hardware is outta wack.

hrmm, try reinstalling your sound drivers off your cd and then try listening to music again.

It might be the source of your music, the mp3 or cd itself. Try another source.

    Cheers,
    Mike

Ye thats the long version of the answer. User error means you have to backtrack. if you cant backtrack you have to reinstall the windows.
