I have a barebone z70va arriving in a few days and have been looking at CPU's. Confused as to what I should be getting, 478 pin or 479 pin, or does it matter? I see the Pentium M 740 for instance but it comes in both pin packages. I have searched and searched but cannot seem to find any info pertaining to the pin situation. Any help would be much appreciated, sorry for the noob question.

It's really hard to know, but I would guess socket 479 (wikipedia). But the safest way is still to wait until you receive the mobo, and get the info from the mobo manual.

The Z70Va is Sonoma platform... so you should get a CPU with 2MB cache and 533 MHz FSB. As far as I know, all Pentium-M CPUs were Socket 479.

Socket 478 is for desktop and socket 479 is for Pentium-M. however, the Pentium-M processors has one missing pin on it make it a 478 pins CPU. So you can just look by the CPU number if it starts with 7X0 (740, 750, 760) then it's the Dothan processor, it works for your Sonoma platform.
