I just received my new z70va for Christmas (mini-review coming...I promise) and I have been extremely thrilled except for one thing. Any time I play a DVD I get a line of green/white pixels along the right edge of the DVD video frame (not the player window) with a reddish to translucent gradient running out from it. It's more noticable at larger resolutions, especially when the player window is wider than the DVD video frame.
This happens in ASUSDVD and Windows Media Player on at least three different DVDs. This led me to think driver. So I searched around on here and found out about free-codecs.com and the k-lite pack. I downloaded it and installed it, playing around with what it had to offer. I couldn't get rid of the line, although one of the combinations of drivers I installed ended up making it a static-like, flickering white line rather than the less obnoxious green one.
I tried some of the same DVDs on my computer at work which has CyberLink PowerDVD installed and they played beautifully.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of this line?
BTW...isn't ASUSDVD just a rebranded WinDVD?

I have the EXCACT problem! When I tryed tried to explain it (you did a way better job) and I was told by a few prominant and very knowledgable posters here and on notebookforums.com that it was most likely user error. But some dvds playback with the flicker and some are just like you decribed. It also is present when I veiw the shoutcast tv from winamp. Like you, I noticed it right away, after I intalled windows xp and started trying out the hardware. I have tried other players, VLC, windvd, wmp, as well as asus dvd, and its there on all of them. When played on my desktop dvd rom the lines are not there. Now, I have a ghosting screen (that will be replaced soon). I really don't think the two issues could be connected, but I am a complete novice user pretty much. Check thoroughly to see if you have a ghosting screen and let me know.

For kicks I tried WMP again and guess what? No green and reddish line. But its still there in vlc, and asusdvd as well as the winamp video window. -
i had the same problem previously, but ever since i recovered my notebook i chose a different codec pack, i dont recall what codec pack i last use, but now i'm using k-lite codec pack. now everything is as of normal.

No news yet diem, sorry. Geared2Play is sending me a full version of PowerDVD to see if that will fix it. In the mean time, they also pointed me to the notebookforums thread where I think you brought up the issue ( http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=123760) and they stopped short of calling you an idiot. Needless to say, the thread wasn't a whole lot of help.

The OMEGA drivers fixed the green line problem for me!!
No kidding. Its gone. I uninstalled asusdvd and vlc. Installed the omegadrivers (after uninstalling ati control panel per instructions) and the green line is gone. The (green/white pixels along the right edge of the DVD video frame (not the player window) with a reddish to translucent gradient running out from it. It's more noticable at larger resolutions, especially when the player window is wider than the DVD video frame) is no longer present. Only thing I cant figure out is that now WMP says it cannot playback dvd. It wants me to reduce the number of colors and/or reduce my resulution. Heh, no big deal tho cause I didn't want to use that pos anyway. -
Sorry Eddie, didn't mean you called someone an idiot. Some of the other posters had deal-with-it attitudes that aren't all that helpful. Thanks for sending that out. Hopefully I'll be watching my new drum corps DVDs on a line-free z70va and be happy!
Good to hear about the Omega drivers deim. I downloaded them the other night but haven't gotten around to installing them yet. Something about working at a computer all day lowers one's impulse to mess with one in the evening. -
I have this feeling that just the new powerdvd is not going to fix it. I would do like I did first and uninstall all previous dvd utilities, dl the omegas, read readme install directions, and then instal the dvd player of your choice. At any rate, let us know what happens.

Get the Lastest Driver @ Asus.com..
I had the Same Problem, once I updated my video Driver to (6571), the Color Bands were gone.
I know How Annoying it is.
BTW, I didn't do anything else.... -
This is purely a "codec" issue so don't fret, just go to free-codecs.com and download newer codecs to get rid of the line.
If you have a friend with a Z63a or a W3V or a newer asus model try to install a newer version of Asusdvd off them.
I am writing to you all on my sister's friend's Z63A that I ordered for her. I installed all software and set it up for her and now I'm just testing stuff out. All I can say is WOW WHAT A LAPTOP~!!!!!!!!
I'm thinking about trading in my Z70Va for a W3V or a Z63A. This is truely an amazing machine.
Oh yeah, back to the topic. Her Z63A shipped with Asusdvd version 6.0 and my Z70va shipped with Asusdvd version 5.0. This 6.0 has a few other useful features that 5.0 didn't have, like more sound options and a new GUI(graphical user interface).
Wow the keyboard on this Z63A is spectacular~!!! Such positive feedback. I love it. I just might ask her to trade laptops. I dont' game much on my Z70Va so might as well get something that's more portable and has a better screen.
The screen on this thing is ... well ... for lack of a better word, KICKASS...yes that's two words but I turned it into one...so what???
Cheers, Just download new codecs or newer dvd software and maybe install newer drivers for your videocard.

Omega drivers seem to have done the trick. No more line for me. Thanks Diem!
Oh yeah, and thanks to Eddie for PowerDVD.
Thanks for the help Shampoo, but I tried all kinds of things with codecs to no avail. It wasn't until I installed the Omega vid drivers that it went away (the new drivers from Asus might solve it too, I don't know. I'm not in the mood to go back and try more stuff now that it's working). Finding someone around here with an Asus is a laugh though. The nearest dealers are a 6+ hour drive away and the only notebooks you find people having here are what's on retailer's shelves or Dell or an occaional Thinkpad. My z70va did come with v6.0 of AsusDVD though so I know what you mean about the extra features.
