does anyone have an audio clip of what a z70va sounds like? some people say it is really loud, some people say they can't hear it, so I would like to get a better sense of how it really is.
I would like to use it in class which is why I am concerned

By default, notebook speakers aren't very loud, and such is the z70va.
But it is quite loud compared to my T21 and LS400...then again, those are over half a decade old heh... -
heh coriolis, he's asking about fan noise not speaker sound
-
I think Bobfet1 wanted to know the loudness of the fans, not the speakers.
I love the 4 speakers, but the fans - I don't see an issue there. Sorry, dont have a sound byte for you. I dont think it'll pick it up. As for using it in a class room, it shouldnt be a problem since I dont think you'll be gaming in there. So the fans shouldn't need to go on at high speeds for basic processing. -
Oh crap...
LOL! I got mixed up with another post in the Accessories forum LOL
Anyways, the fans aren't much of an issue, especially if you use SpeedFan.
Normally mines is on at 80%, because my classes are loud and they drown out the fan noise -
i have a z71v and the GPU fan runs all the time. I can hear it if the room is very quiet, but it sounds like air moving. If it absolutly dead quite, you can sometimes hear the fan speed up and slow down which can be anoying, but i have good hearing and my room can become dead silent (no traffic noise and well insulated house). When I am outside though I NEVER hear my fan. Right now i'm in a quiet hallway in a university math annex and i can't hear a peep from my machine. Classrooms are much louder so you'd NEVER hear the fan.

I can hear the VGA fan during most of my classes but it's not too loud, but when it spins up the whine is easy to hear.
In my room right now it sounds really loud on my desk. Fan is spinning at 2460rpm according to Everest and Speedfan and it's been on for at least the past 20 min. Powerplay is already set on Optimal Battery Life so the GPU is already underclocked. I haven't done anything but surf the net either.
Coriolis - how fast is your VGA fan spinning with Speedfan set to 80%? My default 2460rpm corresponds to when Speedfan is set to 52%, at 80% it's spinning at 3310rpm! No way I could use my laptop in class if my fans were set to that.
The lowest setting for the VGA fan to spin up on it's own is 38% at 1970 rpm. The CPU's lowest setting is 1230rpm when speedfan is set to 34%. It's inaudible at that setting, not that I even need to manually set the CPU fan since it never comes on in class. -
I said right now its at 80%!
In class, since it's just word + MSN/FireFox(hehehe), its often at 20-35% -
How low does the rpm go according to Speedfan? Neither of my fans will spin with Speedfan set below 34%.
-
Hmm, mistake on my part, its actually 40-45..
It's in the 15xx-20xx RPM area -
Mine is only audible in my dead-silent house...plus, when it's unplugged, the fan hardly ever comes on. And now that I've been using a Chill Mat, the thing hardly ever comes on, even without underclocking. Of course, that probably isn't an option in class...
-
btw ... which is the maximum heat for the x700`?
Both at your system and what would kill it -
Hmm...
Pentium M processors automatically shut down at 100 degrees celcius to prevent damage...
As for the GPU, I don't know but I've seen it jump to 80~ degrees.. -
I would say that mine gets pretty loud sometimes for no apparent reason... I am not sure how to get speedfan to work/recognize my fans so that I could make changes and/or have more control of the fan. What I mean by the fan coming on for no apparent reason is the temperature is sitting at 45 degrees same as always (at 800MHZ after being on for ~2 hours) and the fans suddenly come on even with the video card underclocked, other times at the same temperature the fan won't come on at all.
