I have had my z70va for a couple of weeks now, and I just started noticing a soft but audible very high-pitched whine. I have no idea where it is coming from (too high to pinpoint). It is mostly constant, but wavers in and out somewhat. It is present whether the speakers are going or not, so I think it might be a fan. I have posted over on nbforums that I am having trouble with my cpu fan ( here),
but I don't know if it would be related. Right now, both my cpu and gpu are running hotter than they usually do at idle (57 and 79 vs. upper 40s and 60s), and I still can't get any consistent results from SpeedFan. I am undervolted with NHC and followed the instructions found in the forums for configuring SpeedFan, but to no avail. Any suggestions?

edit: go figure that I bring my lappy home and the sound goes away. Maybe it is interference with something at work? Who knows.... Also, my temps are looking alot better, however, my SpeedFan issue still exists (Fan1 doesn't register any rpms)..

greeng0at you can find many threads about that issue. I don't think of it as an issue though as it is normal for most electronic devices to emit a high pitched sound.

Is it so loud that you can hear it in a lunchroom with a few people around or in your livingroom with the television on? If so then maybe you have a problem, but if you can only hear it in a silent room with your face close to your keyboard then you don't have a problem and that noise is normal.

    Cheers,
    Mike

It could be the single fastest spinning device in the entire notebook, the harddrive ;)

Have you tried listening to the AC Adapter?

Genius! That hit the nail on the head. At the museum where I work, my powerstrip is on the back of the desk and I am surrounded by metal cabinets. I guess that high-pitched electronic noise gets trapped and amplified. Thanks a million for saving my sanity (little noises like that drive me nuts)!

    LOL greeng0at~!!!

Good to know we found your problem out. Wow I didn't know the adapter made noises. I always have mine on the floor or somewhere out of sight.

I'm not about to listen for it now though because those kinds of noises drive me up the wall as well, if I'm using my laptop in silent mode.

    Cheers,
    Mike

Put the computer in standby, listen what happens. On my Z71V, as the big annoying power button LED flashes on and off, that high pitched sound turns into a little siren. I had to disable standby on mine, I can't sleep in the same room as it. The power button beacon is too much too, I generally just power off while in a hotel room.

The power supply as well as the notebooks will do that. Not all the same pitch. This is "normal". Some models more then others. There is really not much you can do. You just have to get over it and try not to tune into the laptop so much.

Aha!.. I had this problem. Turn out it was the darn heater near my desk that was making the noise.
