Somethings up with my z71v... i'm thinking maybe my video card got fried, but i've never overclocked it. i was playing a game, but it locked up and i got a screen full of grey things so i just held the power button until it turned off. Now when i try to turn it on, only the fans spin and nothing appears on the screen.

This is really weird because i've never overclocked my video card and i know that the cooling on this laptop is poorly made so i even elevated the back of it so i could get better airflow.

For now I'm just leaving it alone and letting it cool down... I'll try turning it on later but I really hope that this laptop isn't junked.

Are there any for sure signs that a video card is fried or maybe remedies to this? Hopefully an expert like Justin from proportable can help me out

Thanks guys, I hope I can get this fixed.

I had something similar happen on a different computer, an HP which was notorious for a failed video card. That sounds like it could be the culprit. Have you tried connected to an external monitor to check if it is your screen?

Yeah, its definately not the screen because the laptop doesnt even boot up. Usually makes the sounds and flashing LEDs of a booting laptop, but that doesnt happen. It seems like it just freezes at the first stage.

Man this sucks. I just installed new drivers from laptopvideo2go. That might have been it. Absolutely no overclocking though.

Is the z71v discontinued? I think I'm still on warrenty so would it be hard for me to get spare parts?

Now, the Z71v isn't the best system Asus has ever made, but it's certainly no the worst and even their worst systems still have and excellent thermal envelope. I've seen a couple Z71v graphics cards go, and even though that's more than other systems, it's still a super infrequent thing, but possible.

When you hit the power button... give us step by step (sounds and lights) of what you're getting.

After I press the power button the LED with the cylinder symbol (4th one from the left) turn on and then I hear the cd-rom drive spin in search for a cd. then the numlock and capslock LEDs (last two on the very right) flash together twice. After this, only the first LED that turned on stays on and I can hear the fan. Only the video card fan is turning, not the cpu one.

Thanks Justin for taking the time to help me out, really appreciate it.

Can year hear hard drive activity? It might have nothing to do with this, but I would think you would still get some hard drive activity as well. Maybe its not getting far enough to try to boot, but that just strikes me as odd.

Do you have two sticks of ram? If so, I'd swap one out and then the other and see if that helps..... I've take out the hard drive all together and see if you can get into the bios...... might as well take out the optical drive and the battery, just to eliminate things. I've seen ram cause this 9 times out of 10...... a hard drive a few times and believe it or not, once I found a wifi card do it..... so start with the ram and then go to the hard drive and then the wifi card.

When you swap the ram, do different combinations to test the sticks and also the slots....... so you'll need to swap around 3-4 times or so.

Hm how I'm having a little bit of trouble getting to the slot behind the keyboard. The directions say to "release 3 keyboard latches with a pair of tweezers" but I'm not sure what it means by that. Any clarification?

No luck... I tried several combinations and none worked. I did notice that the 4th light from the left, (i never notice the lights so I apologize for not knowing what it means but I'm guessing its the one that flashes when the computer is working) would not stay on when the cd drive was taken out.

Anyways, does this sound like a fried video card? Or is there something else?

Did you reset BIOS to defaults?
Do you have a spare power adapter or battery that is known to have juice in it? To me sounds like not enough power.
I have a adapter that lights, but does not supply juice. Was Similar event, now Nothing. Different adapter or battery, everything is FINE!
