i've been debating about a few laptops in the 15.4" segment for a few weeks now and i've narrowed it down to these computers.. highlights include:

    glossy WSXGA+ screen
    ati x1600
    options for 7200rpm drives
    reasonable price
    all the bangs and whistles

since both dell and asus offer the same features (with a few extras like media direct and option for remote/tv tuner on the dell) i'm trying to choose between these two comps. i'm leaning towards the z96j for it's good build and the good stuff i read on this forums .. but i'm still a little confused

edit: the price differs between the two, the dell works out to be around 100 bucks cheaper.. without any coupons

    cmon now...
I know that dell's are a great deal, but with those types of configuration, I believe the Asus should take it hands down

EDIT*o yea, my reason for saying this is that personally, I think that dell is unattractive (and thats putting it nicely) and build quality?? i've owned 2 dells...all made me wish I had 2 more thumbs to give dell 4 thumbs down

First of being an owner of a Z96J I'm not bias ;) Ok maybe I am alittle...but seriously I just recently bought my Z96J, before which I was a die hard Dell fan and wouldn't think of anything other than Dell. However, before going for the E1505, I did a little research on what other alternatives are available, and that brought me to the Z96J. You can customize it how you like, cheaper, and has a better graphics card (this was the real seller for me). Its was a no-brainer to me. Check it out I'm sure you will like it.

P.S. Check out the Z96 Owner's Lounge thread to get a feel for what people like and dislike in the Z96J

gotta agree with those points .. but if you look at the e1505 now it's possible to get exactly the same features .. graphics card wise, HD wise .. so i guess it just boils down to the build and looks, and probably the finer details

I have a e1505 and love it, but i got mine for about 300 to 400 dollars less than a similarly equiped s96j sans x1600gpu...

but now the coupons for dells suck and there's no point to buying a dell with a worse gpu than the z96j

i'd say... go for the z96j if you need the x1600 and would like an asus... but i think the build quility of a dell is fine... and the look... well, it's not unattractive, but not a beauty for sure.

Weird I checked the dell website before posting my comment and the graphics card was still the ATI 1400 while as you probably know the Z96J has the ATI 1600.

I own a Compal so I am unbiased, go with the Asus, I wish I had waited till the Z96J had come out I would have gotten one of those instead of the Compal.

I prefer the asus z96j beacuse it has a powerful graphic card x1600 and the dell only has a x1400. I think that this asus is a good deal

Some people have mentioned their computer coming in the very same week they ordered.

The X1600 is roughly twice as powerful as the X1400. I think the X1400 gets around 2k in 3D mark 05, and the X1600 gets around 4K. Some people have come close to 5K with OC'ing.

I don't have a clue how you guys could be pricing the dell for less...

The real way to go is to buy a barebones from a reseller with a good warranty, and then pick out cheap parts from a good website like newegg and put it all together yourself. You can save a whole lot of money.

I wouldn't even put the e1505 in the same category as the Z96J. The e1505 is a mainstream notebook aimed at the average web-browser and word processing student. The Z96J is aimed more at gamers, multimedia designers, etc. The higher resolution on the Z96J is a huge bonus. Also the fact that you can pick out all the specific hardware you want. Dell tends to use low end hardware.

Take my friends dell 6000 for example. He paid twice as much for it as I did my Uniwill in my sig. He got a cheap 4200 rpm hard drive with no option for upgrade. I got a 7200 rpm drive. Same size. I got a hitachi, and he got some cheap non-brand hdd I can't ID. He also got some drap ddr2 400 memory. I got twice the amount of ram, and some very nice corsair ram at that. My screen is much nicer than his, same resolution but brighter, clearer, and better colors. My notebook runs cooler than his, and gets longer battery life. It is also much more powerful in the are of graphics. Dell gave him a cheap x300, and a low end 1.6ghz p-m. Sure he could have upgraded to a faster pentium m, but it would have raised his price way out of his budged.

Haha would be interesting to see how the poll goes if you post a similar thread in the Dell forums.

Look in my signature if you want to guess my decision a few months ago.

    you cant even compare those....
the z96 is way more powerfull than the 6400/e1505.
that would be for the graphic card.

the screen is better too on the z96...
