Google just purchased Cloudready.

Google has purchased cloudready. Does this mean we can now download and install full ChromeOS on our old gear?

I have an old HP Elitebook around here somewhere that would be fun to install ChromeOS on and play around with.

Google will now let schools install ChromeOS on their old Windows machines - MSPoweruser

 

I doubt they are going to release the official ChromeOS to be installed on non "chrome" devices.
I hope they didn't buy cloudready just to kill it off.

 

Supposedly, they bought it for education useage. Meaning everyone cannot afford a new chromebook for school, so you can load Chrome onto older devices. that's what I read from that.

 

It would be unusual if they did not. Whether intentional or circumstantial, it seems to be the norm. If not intentional, perhaps it is Big Tech equivalent of the dog chasing car scenario. When the dog catches the car it is absolutely clueless what to do with it, so it moves on to something else. Of course, the difference is the dog doesn't (can't) kill the car. If the dog is insane or extraordinarily stupid compared to other dogs, it may try.

 

I think this should tell you the limits already of what it will allow or permit to install.

Yup... one step forward and two steps backward. As usual. It's too bad that screwing things up has become the natural course of technological evolution. The losers are the end users in every case.

Interesting that the proposed solution to avoid the undesirable consequences of "progress" will be to disable updates... same solution as Windows, LOL.
