As per requested by some fellow (and make note, future) owners of the XPS M1730 (most noteably lorax1284), I have created a brand new thread that will become THE place for owners and prospective owners to discuss and opinionate their thoughts and ideas concerning the XPS M1730. Unlike the current -->*OFFICIAL: Dell XPS M1730 Owner's Lounge*<-- thread, this thread will NOT be an area to downplay the looks, style, and attributes of the recently released XPS system.

**Please note:: There should be only one official thread where a community can form between owners (and prospective) owners of a new computer. However, when one thread becomes contaminated with off-topic and non-owner (and non-prosective owner) comments, there comes a time when an "updated" thread should be created for actual owners (and prospective owners) to communicate.

In the case of the M1730, the Official Owner's Thread was created weeks before the laptop was even officially released and out in the market. Therefore, this resulted in comments and negative opinions concerning an unreleased and unannounced product.
Now that the XPS M1730 has officially been released and people will soon be getting their hands on it, a new thread such as this one should serve better to the owners (and prospective owners) of the M1730.

With that said, let the OFFICIAL (UPDATED) XPS M1730 Owner's Lounge begin. With an ETA for my XPS M1730 set at 10/24, I look forward to sharing my thoughts of the system with you through screen shots, a formal review, and more.

Amen to the OP, I like the looks of the XPS M1730, haters be darned! :D

I'm still waiting on my XPS M1730 order, fully decked out all the way I could configure it:

    Shipping Method: Next Business Day
    Est. Ship Date: 10/19/2007
    Est. Delivery Date: 10/22/2007
    Order Date: 9/27/2007
    Order Status: In Production

Calling Dell Order Status: Pre-Production (still)

I can't wait to get it. Whoever gets theirs first, take tons of pictures and do us all a favor with a great review. I'll sure do it if I get mine first.

Please re-read the introduction I wrote at the start of this thread. There needn't be any comments like this one and the one prior to yours.

    ----

Anyone out of the U.S. receive their XPS backpacks to join their arriving M1730s? If so, how are they; are they similar to the M1710 backpacks?

I'm a bit worried now... my M1730 was ordered on Sept 27th, the day that Dell.ca had the X7900 upgrade @ $300... it has subsequently been increased to $750.

I had 1 order cancelled (submitted Sept 27th) due to a misconfiguration, then I logged in to check the status today, and the second order (submitted Oct 2) was cancelled: I hadn't received an email or phone call.

I called my sales rep today (Saturday) who was as confused as I was and put the order immediately back in and it's now in "Production" as the second one was when it was cancelled.

I tell ya, if this one gets cancelled, it's staying cancelled, even though I probably won't get $450 off any time soon (but if I wait a bit and the 8800 SLI comes out, and I get it with that card, instead of after-delivery upgrade, I may save that much anyway).

    And now... we wait....

    DellFan,

You should probably leave the choices up to the mods on this board to make that decision (as far as what should be where, etc).

Last time I checked, you are not a moderator.....

Does anyone have pictures of the power adapter?

    I'm planning to get it.

Hmmmm... I think this comment was on another board but the fan noise is noticable but not distracting so it wont be a worry

As speaking of the power adpater, im pretty sure it will be big like the previous machine cuz its estimated 230W

    probably a typo
    IT IS 8700M GT SLI

I went to the Dell Real Site and the staff showed me the AC Adapater and woa....
It was the size of a DVD case. HOwever,i was expecting that cuz the adapter has to feed the machine a 230W for the cpu and especially the SLI configuration

    Shipped Date: 6th October 2007
Est. Delivery Date: 8th October, now 15th
    Order Date: 29th Sept 2007
Order Status: On it's way somewhere.

I think mine is either being shipped the scenic route via the North Pole or the ship or plane has been hijacked
My XPS still hasn't arrived in Sydney although it was shipped 6th Oct.

Dell do fly their parcels don't they?
OMG hope it's not coming on one of Jetstar's broken down planes or I'm never going to receive it this year.

You probably right about via North Pole because planes cannot fly directly toward the location due to the earth's rotation and axis (this sounds geeky)
So i think it will take more than you think to reach Australia but didnt you order in Australia? Dell Australia should be manufacturing the machine

What ur sayin is kinda awkward cuz CJ is gonna get it first obviously unless the ship or plane was hijacked. If he told us how long its gonna take to Australia, theres no job you can do here lol

Yep, that will be interesting how long it takes you to get your's once ordered.

I'm actually in Tasmania, not that it should make any difference. Dell phoned me today to tell me I will have mine delivered by Friday. Apparently the parts shortage was the XPS chassis. They had to wait for them to be made.

    Hey People,

I get a new laptop every year (Tax reasons).. I've been holding out an extra few months for the XPS..

I ordered it on the 5th of Oct, its due to arrive on the 15th..

It was due to arrive on the 11th but they had part shortages... I still don't understand how they can announce a new laptop and have part shortages within a few days. Anyway 15th is still a decent turn around.

    Ordered on the 5th
Machine was built on the 10th
Machine was shipped on the 10th
I expect it to arrive today (12) in Aus and get through customs.. or it will sit in customs over the weekend and i'll get it on monday/tues next week.

Anyway, in total it cost me $4000. The only thing i didn't really get was the blueray drive (i think its a waste) and the extreme CPU ($1000 for a cpu, no thanks :p)...

    Btw i'm Sydney, Australia.

    Cheers
    Steve

Like the rest of you, I too am looking forward to receiving my XPS M1730...

Oct 1 - order received by Dell
Oct 2 - work in progress
Oct 9 - manufacturing build complete
Oct 9 - ship from factory
Oct 10 - loading for export
Oct 16 - estimated delivery date (according to the system)

Had a call from the transport company used by Dell here in Sydney, Australia on Oct 10 to arrange delivery for Monday (Oct 15).

Specs I ordered: Smoke Gray, X7900 CPU, 4GB RAM, 64GB SSD, 64GB SS 2nd Drive, Audigy HD software, Microsoft Office 2007 Basic, Vista Ultimate 32-bit, McAfee 36-months OEM, 3-year warranty, AGEIA PhysX PPU.

I work from home doing share trading on the ASX. Have always preferred laptops. Looking forward to connecting the 1730 to my Dell 3007WFP-HC monitor and enjoy 2560x1600 resolution. Also the laptop gives me the freedom to trade when not at home. Yes, even on vacations!!!

Have not played any computer games for the last three years but might just have to start again. The 1730 will replace my Inspiron 9100 which I bought over 3 years ago.

Obviously I don't mind spending this much on a laptop mainly because it is a legitimate tax deduction.

if the system was ordered with 4 gigs of ram; do they put the 32 bit or 64 bit version of vista on the system. The 32 bit will only see 3 of the 4 gigs so it may be pointless to order the 4 gigs of ram if you only get the 32 bit operating system

At this stage Dell is only offering the 32-bit version. I will move to 64-bit Vista in time when it is eventually sold OEM with the XPS M1730. I ordered it with 4GB RAM for the near future, not just present needs.

I think Dell is ripping off Australians at the moment.
With the exchange rate at US$1 = approx Aus90c. Look at the deals on the US website compared to the Aus website.

Is it possible to make a configuration in the US, pay with a Creditcard (Visa) connected to an Australian Bank, and get them to ship it Aussie? (Queensland).
