Sorry to hear that. I just received a 2nd screen replacement for my XPS 16. I know they used refurbished parts, but the current replacment for mine has a similar issue where the loose part is slightly above the hinge. I called, and they are coming in to replace the whole screen. Of course, mine is already a refurb'd screen, so I don't really care that it's getting replaced by another refurb'd part, and you may want to just fix it yourself b/c your screen itself is working fine.

Wow my first one had a gap like that..

Man the build quality of these are crap. So hit and miss. I remember that bugged the crap out of me.

also for some reason I peeled those plastic tabs off from each corner the other day..I regret doing so. had them on for like 6-7 months..now if I close the lid all the way and then open it back up, I notice the round hinge part digging into silver accent below it, cause small scrapes...

    sigh Dell..

Had mine replaced due to this about 3 months ago, it's now opened up again. I suspect the heat from the vent is causing this.

I had that problem. I pulled the end caps off and put a little super glue in there and closed it back while making sure it was sealed all the way around. I worked perfect and I dont see myself needing to remove it anytime soon since its kind of a perma fix.

As you might've seen in another post, the scratch on my replaced screen actually reveals that those pieces on the lid are plastic, not aluminum! Dell--seriously????

Yeah, the individual components of the display assembly aren't supposed to be user-replaceable parts. I had a friend who tried to fix a similar problem with a 1340, and it didn't go over all that well. All the cosmetic stuff is held together by tape and glue, so once it goes, there's really not much you can do to fix it.

I believe its plastic, The ends that cover the hinge at the very end of each side were coming off on the xps I got from bestbuy and I decided to pull it all the way off. It was a flap with tabs on it that clips into place. It kept coming up so I glued it. I believe it was krazy glue. I was surprised myself to see that it was plastic as it feels aluminum.

you may have missed my post above yours. sadly, I believe the lid silver parts, at least, is not aluminum. it's plastic spraypainted silver. I know this from a refurbished screen I got that has the paint scratched over.
