I have a l702x and went to plug in a usb mouse into the back reaching over and behind the display and ... I heard a "thunk". To my surprise, it was the end of the usb plug that attached itself to my top lcd bezel.
It caught itself to the left of the webcam.
Has anybody else seen this? I've tested with other usb cables and it works like a charm.
Help? Could this be there to help the lid stay closed?

Mine isn't as near as I can tell...I tried all over both sides of the bezel, and nothing remotely acting like a strong magnet.
-
For reference, I have a 900p display right now. Being replaced by the 3D. I don't think any of my other specs really matter in this case. -

Um, I take it all back. I have a USB drive stuck to the front of the bezel about 1" to the left of the webcam mike port as you said. Somehow I missed it earlier...it is DEFINITELY a strong magnet there...
My guess is it is actually what tells the system you closed the lid. It might be there to help hold it closed too, but the magnet is roughly over the left half of the touchpad. Suggests an internal switch to me, a catch I would expect in the middle of the face.
I've had this thing apart 3 times, I am 99% sure the hinges don't have a sensor in them to tell when the lid is closed. -
I'd think it's a switch too, but my system sleeps/hibernates when the lid is about 75% closed +/-, not all the way. -
I had my bezel replaced and the technician told me that the magnetic sensor near the camera was out of place which was why the bezel was sticking out. So the XPS does have a magnetic sensor in that area to signal when the lid is closed.

Yea. Just like the studio series. I can attach keys and spoons next to the webcam.
