What about the material around the display? On the pics it looks like black glossy plastic! But in description it is anodized aluminum.
Anyone can confirm what is it?

The bezel is plastic, the anodized aluminium is the backside of the lid..

    It's ridiculously glossy. It's like a mirror.

If those specs are accurate it actually looks better than average for notebook screens.

Congratulations, I see from your sig that you are one of the 200 people who got a "Radiance" screen on their 14" Envy. That option disappeared for good when the 200 screens HP procured were gone. Got HP a lot of good reviews for the Envy though.

    That's called "bait and switch".

That's a 17.3 inch screen, not the 15.6 inch that is in the XPS 15... I do hope you noticed that.

According to this: Dell XPS 15 Review - A Review of the Dell XPS 15

You can change the keyboard brightness in Windows Mobility Center. Nice :)

The review complained a little about design, and also said it could run "a little warm", but tooted the speakers' horn!

    There's something I don't understand though:

The XPS 15's Intel WiFi Link 1000 802.11n radio
managed mediocre transfer rates of 29.6 and 19.8 Mbps at distances of 15 and 50 feet from the router. Those numbers are a bit short of the 30.6 / 21.2 Mbps category averages and weak in comparison to the HP Envy 14 (48 / 18.3 Mbps) and Lenovo IdeaPad Y560d (33.7 / 24.6 Mbps).

Is this normal? They guy is complaining about transfer rate for Wifi 15ft away!

Thanks for the reply. I am waiting for the reviews of XPS 15 , particularly reports on heating, throttling, etc. and then, either go with Envy 14 [luckily in India a few HP dealers have the ones with radiance screen] or XPS 15 [1080HD].

It's a shame, it looks like heat is going to be an issue on yet another line of Dell's. sigh. Was hoping that with this notebook's LACK of sleekness, it would actually cool better. Oh well.

Just wondering if the game tests for the GT 420 on notebookcheck.com are accurate cause they show almost 25 fps on high settings for most of the games tested!

    Is this possible or what?

Never used IdeaStorm before but those of you who would spend 1 minute to check out the link and sign up, you don't need to do an email response, just register immediately and promote the idea. Dell is actually thinking about it.

Well said, guys I'm looking for a laptop to get around Thanksgiving, when they're having sales - currently, I am stuck between HP Envy 17 3D or the XPS 17, will the XPS screen be better with the B+RG? Or should I just go with the Ultrabright Infinity screen on the Envy?
    Thanks for the help guys

From the review linked above, how accurate do you think this statement is?

It backs it up with this, but I am hoping to get some of your opinions on this before I consider this over an outlet M15x.

LOL. They must consider intel integrated graphics as the 'category average'. Also, how is a 11fps difference 'on par'??

Also, notice they made no reference to what the FarCry 2 settings were for their benchmarks.

What's interesting is that the Envy14/5650 pushes more frames the XPS15/420m at low-res/1024x768, but at high res the 420m has the higher framerate. I wonder if they're turning the detail up as well as the resolution.

    Hello guyz!
I ordered mine XPS 15 (from the rightmost column on Dell site: i7-740, 6GB ram, 9cell...) + FullHD + backlit kb + bluetooth 3.0 on 22-10-2010 and got an EDD on 18-11-2010.
Please tell me - will it play 3D with Sony Bravia 3D-capable TVs like KDL-52HX900 for example?

I think it will, that is what 3D play is supposed to do.

Ah, yes, I spell it categorise, because I familiarised myself with this way of spelling.

The closest laptop in the market currently to beat Dell XPS 15 on specs is the ASUS G53JW-A1. However, I feel the design is something that only certain people can love (and I am not one of them :p )

I was initially rooting for this laptop until Dell released their revamped XPS line. For almost the same price, ASUS' option is hard to beat.

The price of Asus G53JW-A1 also starts from $1,479 :D
More ever its a not laptop which you can take into board room :(

I would have happy to see the same aesthetic of SXPS 16 with all reported problems/issues solved in XPS 15 :)

I have noticed that the different configs of xps 15 all use the same BIOS. I wonder if that will mean its the same motherboard if you buy the i5 or i7 (except for gfx card of course). That could mean its possible to switch the i5 for i7 or vice versa!!
Keeping my fingers crossed as I want to put an i5 in my xps 15 instead of the i7

Ahh, for me I couldn't be bothered to buy a CPU and switch it myself. Would this void the warranty? Probably not right?

It most probably is possible to switch. Dell is just being a tart.

    I currently have a SXPS 1645, i7 720, 6GB, ATI HD4670 1GB

How big of an improvement for gaming (only care about improving gaming) would a new XPS 15 be?

Worth the extra cash and hassle?

I also have an XPS desktop with an i7 860, 8GB, and an ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB. I'm wondering if I should just set that up as my hybrid gamer.

stick with the desktop xps if you're interested in hardcore gaming. it doesn't have the killer gpu but neither has the xps 15 with its 435gt. but the desktop is more simple to upgrade graphic card wise. that doesn't mean you can't game on the xps 15 but maybe not as comfortable and fast as on a desktop.

Agree. But what is the point of an actual "business" laptop such as a Vostro? Surely you would pick an XPS over a Vostro. XPS is also classed under "business" (at least M1330 was) though. Unless you need the GT 330, a Studio would be as good as a Vostro.

All the drivers for the XPS are up on Dells website, you can find the manufacturer there. I don't have the link right here, but will post it later.

Your desktop is better for gaming. I don't know what games you're playing right now, but the SXPS is probably fine for games like Starcraft 2, and any laptop in this class is going to struggle running high framerates on shooters at high res and high detail.

After reading the review the XPS 15 should do better with a 435m GPU than the Envy 14 5650 as with the 420m the benchmarks were pretty close to the 5650, don't know about the lenovo y560d but it may get closer, so that is a good thing to know as I have been considering on getting the Envy 14 long time ago, thought i will like to see a review with the 435m to confirm this.

Same goes for the rest of the benchmarks as they where made with a basic spec laptop and dell gives you several options to get better hardware compared to HP.

I ordered a XPS 15 base model with backlit upgrade but now I'm wondering if I should have opted for 1080p display option.
    I've never owned a 15.6" laptop with 720p display (I currently own a XPS 1640 with 1600X900 display).
    What do you guys recommend?
I will mostly use it as everyday laptop (web browsing, watching movies, very light gaming...).
I can always resell the one that's in production if its too late to cancel since I got it for under $700 after EPP discounts.

Also how does the new XPS 15 compare to the Studio XPS 16 heat-wise?

(I dont have the XPS 1640 temperature numbers but it gets too hot to keep it on my laps...even when only watching movies)

XPS 15 temperatures from laptopmag review:

    Heat - Touchpad
    95.0 degrees
    Heat - G+H Keys
    92.0 degrees
    Heat - Bottom
    102.0 degrees )

We don't know how the temps are yet, but odds are they'll be better than the Studio XPS, as the Studio XPS was really a terrible design for cooling.

I'd personally much prefer the lower resolution screen-I'd even pay more for it-but that's entirely personal preference.

Why? Higher resolution is better. Simply raise Windows DPI if text is too small. It's the best of both worlds.
