Starting this Poll to get feedback on the XPS 15z + possible screen issues

[ Mesh like pattern / lines on 1080p LCD screen ]

Can you see prominent horizontal/vertical lines between the pixels when looking from about a foot away. This can be viewed at all resolutions , as it is a characteristic of the LCD screen.

Re: xps 15z screen issues - Laptop General Hardware Forum - Laptop - Dell Community

Can you folks confirm if you can see the lines between pixels during normal use?
Also , post the model of your LCD Panel , Config : i5/i7 ?

Go to Control Panel > Device Manager > Monitor > Hardware ID , and post your panel info.

The usual panel is the AUO B156HW03 ( ID: AUO30ED) , as confirmed here:

AnandTech - Dell XPS 15z: Sincerely Flattering
    AUO - TFT-LCD

I have sent it back to Dell for them to "see" the issue. Apparently the engineers here cannot tell if it is an issue or not :) .

Although Dell is willing to replace the screen , i dont want to wait a month for them to get another panel with the same mesh !

I got my new XPS 15z today and i can notice the mesh like problem on small images and icons especially when browsing! Ugghh.

I cant believe a laptop of this quality comes with a screen like this! Seems like a screen issue to me.

My xps 15z arrived on Monday. The graininess/vertical lines/mesh like pattern was immediately noticeable. Its clearly a crappy screen as images appear fuzzy/pixelated!

The screen also had 2 stuck pixels when I first turned it on which disappear and reappear intermittently. This together with the graininess and a bulge in the chassis at the front of the laptop under the trackpad has me extremely annoyed and disappointed. As soon as dell customer services gets back to me this is going straight back.

No issues here at all - the 1080p screen is amazing. I would definitely recommend getting the laptop returned straight away if you have an issue..

Yep, I see the grainy text/small images from ~1 foot away. I have the i7/8GB/2GB 520/1080p config, which I love apart from the screen...

Moreso than the grainy quality, I have visible vertical lines in some images...

I got a new dell xps 14z with the same problem on screen. It is not a 1080 15 inch screen but has same issue with the pixel mesh. It looks very bad and cheap for the price range the xps 14z is listed. Dell support is not knowing about the issue (German dell support). What can I do? I think if they switch the screen the problem will still be there because it is a cheap display.

Dell India support says their sample XPS 15z screen also looks the same, and they don't consider it to be an issue . :S

Has anyone got the screen replaced / got a new 15z that did not have this problem?

You what dell Indian support sucks, crappy service support and lack of knowledge. It's happen when you get cheaper Chinese product and here same case with Dell service, when it was handle by Singapore that time the service was awesome. I find many people complain about these thing, they talk like robot, never try to understand what customer trying say, really. I also have Apple products and the way they treat their customer and provide A class service.

Can folks with / without this issue, check for the dell Part number on Dell support?
You need your service tag for this ...

The stickers are at the bottom right. I'm still waiting to get the laptop back from them .

    Dell says:
    1. We don't see a problem as such.
    2. Even both our reference XPS 15z looks like this.
    3. If you order a replacement panel, it will also be the same

I still need to get some clarity on how to request a different panel , or what to ask for!

    Dear Mr. "anderson",

This email is with reference to your conversation with Dell on the service tag xxxxxxxxx . As discussed the system was analyzed at Dell and it is working as designed. We regret to inform you that a part replacement will not be possible as there is no issues with the system/ LCD .

Sorry its my mistake, my screen is Model Number AUO30ED. To answer Alias, yes the screen is fuzzy everywhere. Its small but noticeable. The best way to see that the screen is grainy and cant show small details is when you look at a open software tab in the taskbar, there is a shadow that goes from the middle left side to top right side. On a good screen, the curved line is perfect, on the xps 15z its not perfect at all, u can see 3 step like movement in the line.

Regarding the pixelated images / patchy images, i have narrowed it down to the saturation settings - Splendid colour. This tends to blow out the highlights, causing this issue.

You can check on this page:
    My settings were:
    DPI scaling at 100 % ,
    IE9 , No text zoom

Look at the image on KenRockwell.com: Photography, Cameras and Taking Better Pictures
    Bigger version here: http://www.kenrockwell.com/Images/me/KR-WAP-1481-pxl.jpg

Now, open "windows mobility center" and change the colour mode, from normal to Splendid. You can see the textures etc blown out (especially on this image) .

This might explain the "patchiness" / blown out images?

@Alias, can you confirm if your problem was caused by the saturations settings? Is your new screen also set to "splendid colour" ?

Yup, that was it. My new screen has it set to off thus resolving it patchiness in images.

Great. Can others confirm the same ?

"Is the patchiness in images resolved when setting the color mode to --> normal "

However, this does not explain the fine lines on the screen. Anyone got a new laptop/ panel that does not have the lines :) ?

@anu , I got a call from another support member

They are ready to go ahead and replace the screen, but do not confirm that the issue will be resolved . ( i.e. they do not consider it an issue yet ).

Strictly speaking, the screen on the XPS 15z, is extremely bright, and has great colors, ( including the over-saturated "splendid color" mode) , and these lines seem to be the only downside.

I have asked them to check if there are multiple parts / suppliers for the XPS 15z screen in for US/APJ region.
Also ,they said, a "few" people have reported this issue, but rest assured not yet warranted a complete product recall .

I will be heading to a Dell store to checkout the 15z vs 15 Full HD screens, and will send them my feedback if there are any noticeable differences between them.

Bro, there are plenty of people who reporting this particular issue, what does it mean they are liar or they have color blindness. When Dell guy come to your home you show that issue what he said, do you have any friend near by you have same same model then you can compare both system then it will for dell to see the difference. Normal user can't find these type of difference until they are not inform Do one more thing highlight these issue in all forums, So all user easily inform and they also spread this issue to others.

Checked out an XPS 15z at a dell outlet in Mumbai. Same issue. ( Fine lines across the screen)

@lancorp ... Can you confirm if your issues were caused by the colour saturation settings ? Are the lines present on both screens?

Also saw the XPS 17 , no such issue -- it uses an LG panel.

I got my screen replaced and i still have the same problem. Its true that by changing the screen settings from Superb to Normal it diminishes the lines or pixelation on the screen, but small images still look bad and you can still see the pixels. I actually connected another screen by HDMI that normally looks perfect and clone the desktop on it and i then got the same problem on the second screen too, making me think that the problem might be with the graphic card. I had the same 3 "stairs like" movement in the shadow of a open tab software in the windows taskbar. Can someone confirm this ?

Chrome is the open tab ,here.

I just saw the 1080p screen on the XPS 15 . The B+RG LED screen is a beauty, with no trace of the screen mesh / patch images.

Also heard that Dell is withdrawing the upgrade option to that screen on the XPS 15, leaving no other screen to compare with!

I've now looked at 5 displays, all of them exhibit the same issue.

Anyone who thinks replacing the display will "fix" the issue is mistaken. Mine was replaced, same thing. Changing from generic color to splendid color in the Windows Mobility Center improves issue slightly.

Please stop spreading rumors that dell has a "fix for this issue".

Who spreading the rumors here, I think tarunactivity is one who post the screen issue and people start noticing. Dell changed his screen once and whole laptop once still the issue remains. Even I saw someone mention here Dell delete his post from the community In my case I get lottery panel.

I don't know but my screen is fine. However I have list of issue and soon I'm going to file a suite. The specially wifi card issue is the worst thing which I faced. I complain to the dell they send me the inferior card 6200, right now I'm out of station so I didn't get any chance to check it. I will update the result when I get back.

I owned the 15z and did not notice this. However, I immediately disabled the Intel graphics power saving features which degrade visual quality (e.g., bumping down contrast depending on screen color). Has anyone tried disabling the power-saving options to see it makes a difference?

It may very well be a quality control issue with the panel manufacturer.

Can you elaborate on the power saving features?

So my screen came in and its listed as

    Yes 0 / 2010 44806 (0xAF06) 12525 (0x30ED) 0 X 0 34.4 X 19.3 cm (15.5 Inch) 34 X 19 cm (15.3 Inch) Yes No No No No 2.20 0 (0x00000000) 1.4 AUO30ED\4&1237caf0&0&UID67568640 1/23/2012 7:01:46 PM

I disabled splended color and that fixed that INSANE contrast issue I was getting that made small pictures/avatars look grainy. The colors don't pop out as much, but everything looks much better. I noticed that facebook pics did not look as great as in my other 1080p monitor. I am also running the newest beta driver for the nvidia card...

I can't tell if I am getting the screen door effect... How are you guys doing your close up screenshots? I am using the small windows bar and the icons down there look just fine.

Also for reading text do you guys have it zoomed in at all? At 100% text is pretty small but I can still read it. I am almost 30 though so my eyes may not be as good as you guys so I am pretty sure that I will have some serious eye strain if I keep it up.
