    Hello All,

First my apology if my question had been asked before.

I'm having XPS L502x with 2630QM CPU. I understand it is Sandy Bridge chipset and the socket is PGA998.

I'm willing to upgrade my CPU to the 3rd gen (Ivy Bridge) say 3820QM.. having read on intel website both are using the same socket PGA998.. and searching around it is say both Sandy and Ivy are backward compatible ( Ivy Bridge vs. Sandy Bridge | ITProPortal.com)

My question is can I upgrade my CPU? and have anyone tried it ? I've been looking over the net but can't find the definite answer

    Thanks

I suspect you would run into the same problem as other Intel 6-series motherboards; without a BIOS upgrade for Ivy Bridge, you're dead in the water, even though the socket is the same (IIRC, rPGA988B).

So far as I know, the following chipsets weren't scheduled for an Ivy Bridge BIOS upgrade. Desktop: Q65, Q67, B65. Mobile: HM67, HM65, UM67, QS67, QM67. The XPS 15 uses HM67, so your highest upgrade is an i7-2860QM. I definitely wouldn't risk an XM on the XPS 15.
