    Hi Guys,

I got my m1330 in November last year. I was pretty happy with it but yestarday I have noticed that my slot in dvd M_a_t_s_h_i_t_a UJ-857G can't read some recorded dvds. Some times it reads them and some times not. I didn't noticed that problem before. With CDs there is no problem.
Did somebody had the same issue? I want to know if there is any solution for this (fw upgrade etc.) before I send it back to Dell.

Are all the DVDs from the same region?

Those dvd are self burned data dvds, so region doesn't matter. anyway drive is region lock free. Windows manager sometimes sees those discs and sometimes not. I can't find website with fw upgrade for this drive. does anybody know this website?

i tried TDK, verbatim, and some no name brands. no luck. It can see empty discs and record them but after that it can't see what it has just recorded. weird

My guess is hardware failure - I had similar symptoms with the mats..ta drive in my sony laptop. Repaving didn't fix it, I had to get a new drive.

I bought an XPS M1330 in January and my DVD drive... well... it can't read any DVDs or CDs at all it seems. I didn't notice it before, because I rarely used the drive anyway. I tried to burn on or two normal CDs once, and both times it failed, but I didn't care that much about it.

Hm, I guess I will contact Dell support now :)

are those DVDs self-burnt DVD-DLs? there might be recording problems in DVD-R DLs due to the variance in quality between the two layers, leading some dvd drives to be able to read it...

    try cleaning the drive/lens

Sometimes drives can have difficulty reading other disks burnt by other burners. I have an external burner, and its burnt DVD/CDs couldn't be read by the same computer's internal drives, but was able to be read (albeit with odd behavior) by my laptop's burner. If I burned the same DVD with my laptop, then everything in my house was able to read it.

On the whole my drive works ok, but only recently it hasnt been able to read the Dell 'DRIVERS AND UTILITIES' disc that came with the bloody thing

I think it may be a dodgy disc...
