I have finally decided on the system I want to order, Dell (UK) has reasonable deals at the moment, they end on the 30th Jan.

I return to the UK in 4 weeks time, for two weeks break before returning back to Asia.

The Dell UK Live Chat rep said that estimated delivery will be 14th Feb, and if I e-mail him personally he can "Priorotise" (??) my order.

Obviously I do not want the box waiting at my house for 2 weeks unopened and unchecked, though that is better than it not being delivered.

    1. I have heard about some 21 day limit for delivery queries, is this so? If they deliver early as reported by some people and I open the box 21 days after delivery, and the screen is cracked, or the laptop faulty, have I lost my consumer rights.

    2. Would the e-mail contact with the rep invalidate my Quidco 5% cash back.

    3. Should I contact the rep again, or just take pot luck?

Has anybody got any similar experience or advice.

    Thanks for any help.

    My new system will be:
Dell XPS M1530 - Tuxedo Black
    Core 2 Duo T7250 2.0GHz
    2GB RAM
    nVidia GeForce 8600M GT 256MB DDR3
    250GB 5400rpm SATA
    15.4" 1440x900 WXGA+
    Intel Wireless-N Mini-card
    9-cell Lithium Ion battery

    1. For the UK, it's 8 days.
    3. The rep has no way of speeding up your build. Everyone wants their laptop faster, you're no more special than anyone else.

You should order when you definitely going to be in town for the delivery date.

For UK it is actually '7 working' days.

You will find all these information on the Dell UK website under Terms and Conditions.

I don't want my build speeding up, I want it slowing down! Delivery in 5 days would be bad, 3 weeks good.

On my last two UK visits, I planned to order two weeks before returning, but the configurations I had planned to buy vanished (eg inspiron 1520 Nvidia graphics), as did any decent deals.

    8 working days then.

The reps can't do anything to the build process. They can't make it faster, they can't make it slower either.

    Consumers:
7.3 Consumers may cancel their Orders for any reason until, but no later than:
7.3.1 the end of the 7th "working day" (days other than weekend days & public holidays) after the day of receipt of the Product &/or of the Service Order Confirmation (as applicable)

From the Dell website...if the end of the 7th working day means '8 working days' then donno...

Btw Lithus where did you quote that from?

I have used the Dell "Live Chat" again.

The rep assured me that the 7 or 8 working days to cancel or return my order is only if I change my mind for personal reasons, (e.g wrong colour, or I decide I want a different make) and not if there are any defects or damage to the delivered product.

I must order as I need a new laptop, my beloved Inspiron 8200 has developed a hairline crack in the lid, and Araldite can only be a temporary solution.

But defects and damage will then be covered under warranty. You won't have any guarentee that you can get your money back. Dell just reserves the right to fix it.

Good point Lithus, and of course I might get one of the (rumoured) poor quality screens.

If Dell knows the shipment will not be checked within 7 days that might even increase the risk of a poor screen if the are trying to offload a bad batch.
